So, I'm finally mentally prepared to the amount of a gun for something I won't own for 6-9 months.

But I am really confused on how I go about this. I seem to be reading both old and new information. no idea what forms to use. how to go about the process. do I need a trust? Do I need approval before after purchasing the silencer...

Can someone school me on the basics here of first time suppressor ownership.

Have you seen this sticky?

Assuming you’re buying from a dealer, they’ll handle the paperwork for/with you.

The actual serial number of the silencer you’re buying goes on the form, so you don’t go get a stamp and then choose an item.

What are you thinking for a first one...rifle? Pistol? Rimfire?

Ever actually shot suppressed?

If you’re making your own (I’m guessing you’re not) it’s a Form 1. If you’re buying an existing silencer, it’s a Form 4.

You don’t need a trust, but I still recommend them. It’s basically the same amount of paperwork, just split between two forms if filing as a trust/corp. You'll have more flexibility in the long run with one filed as an entity.

TarheelState Firearms in Matthews if you buy one from a dealer. ...one stop shop. He will do the photos and prints at the shop. He will walk you through it and make it easy.

I did see that. I need the Dummies version :). Looks like few different things going on there. Very thorough for questions within form and what not, but I haven't got that far yet. I don't even know if I can do online vs paper. Sounds like some stores will guide me too.

Also sounds like I need FBI prints again. what a $$$ scam. I'm sure NC will want them when I get CHP too. I have now had my prints taken 3 times in two states with an FBI background check and prints for all 3 to boot...They should be giving me a damn security clearance after next one lol. Funny how prints from another state are valid in a court of law if I blinked wrong with my gun, but not when I need to buy or carry.

Anyway, digression over...Have NOT shot suppressed yet. I THINK I want to go somewhat universal.like 2 tops for now. Either centerfire + rimfire, or rifle + handgun, depending on what makes the most sense. I like the idea of alerting less of the woods while hunting, especially so for the 'Hollywood quiet' 22lr with squirrel. My expectations are realistic. I fully expect to be disappointed w/ 223/556 and will not be basing my purchases around that caliber, but would like something that can shoot it (30 cal can?)...

Tag for interest. Because 300BO can in near future.

Before you spend hard earned $, I’m sure they’re a felony in Chapel Thrill

Ask around and a shoot a few first. I went with a 22lr & 30 cal cans for 223, 6.5G & 300BLK, a .460 is in NFA prison. TBAC’s testing has shown a 223 in a 30 cal can is 2db louder than a 223 can. Catch me after Jan 1st and you can try them, I’m shooting a lot less out back for venison reasons.
@BigWaylon seems to have some of the most experience around these here parts.

(We now interrupt this thread for a very brief hijack.)

So true, I've not been able to shoot on the property where I hunt since September! Since I'm done for the season, I went out there on Friday and blasted away like it was Chicago on a full moon hot July Saturday night. Felt so good but I'm afraid a more than a few tin cans died.

Don’t worry about the prints. If you use THSF he’ll do them for you. If you use the Silencer Shop system, you can scan them at their kiosk. And if you’re using anybody else, you can just roll your own at home.

There is no electronic Form 4. It has to be paper, even if you fill it out on a computer and print it out.

You can submit a Form 1 using EForms, but that’s only for making new NFA firearms.

If you’re going to do it they are great especially for first-timers ... and the paperwork while not hard goes real easy with a knowledgeable dealer. Personally I’d do a Trust and have anyone in your home of legal age on it along with any heir you possibly could leave one to. That means photo and prints for all but Tarheel will knock a few out almost as quick and just as easy as one.

If doing it start out with a very good .22 rimfire can (my rimefires are quieter than higher powered pellet rifles with standard velocity ammo) along with the centerfire can you’re thinking of. Yeah, it’s $200 per stamp plus the can but you’ll get it over and done. Honestly, a good handgun can is very desirable also. A suppressed .45acp or 9mm is almost as fun as .22lr plus a suppressed handgun is a plus for home defense ... it’s still damn loud in a hallway with no hearing protection but the ringing stops in in an hour or two where unsuppressed will last for days if not even some level of permanent loss.

Will do. We can suppressor up and get some coyotes.

oh man. Kinda forgot I will need to buy threaded barrels for all of my handguns. Threaded barrels caused global warming where I came from.

looking forward to Raising my daughter in the good ol US of A

maybe not ALL your handguns, but at least some of them...
it's a very different and thunkier feel, shooting wit a suppressor on. Start stocking up on subsonic 9mm/22/300 ammo when you find it on sale, it makes a huge difference. If you're just about to buy now and still have almost a year to wait, you'll have time to catch at least a couple sales and spread the cost out.
