Im going through my AR's trying to get them squared away. Most of them are running low lumen lights - a few Streamlight Polytacs (275 lumens) and a SureFire Scout (KX1A head - about 200 lumens).

Can I upgrade the head on the Surefire scout? and if so, is it worth it? It seems like I can buy a new head (KE1H - 500 lumens), but I don't see any reviews for that option.

Any other opinions on new options for WML? Really looking at two options - lower lumen for "in the house" AR pistol, and a high lumen/longer throw option for things that are outside.

Cloud defensive rein for outside high throw. The surefire scout lights are dated at this point but they are still solid lights. I wouldn’t throw it away if I were you. Use your surefire for inside work and get a new tech light for your outside duties.

500 lumen SF vs 200 lumen one is a really significant difference. Runtime may be similar, but amount of throw will be very different. I would consider upgrading the head. Price wise it may be cheaper to sell the whole scout and get a new one than replace the head only ;)

You can also take a look at what Malkoff has to offer in terms of heads - they will be fully compatible with SF body and are known for high quality and come with lifetime guarantee, like SF. Some are crazy throwers (E1HT for one cr123 body) but with not much side spill. They are US made.

My two cents!

I would personally replace those with more modern lights, like the Cloud Defensive Rein/OWL or one of the Modlites.

I also am not a subscriber to the theory of using low lumen lights for indoors. I’ve said this every time the topic comes up. If you are blinding yourself in doors with your light, then you need to get some proper training because you do not understand how to use a light properly.

The only thing I would consider if I wanted one dedicated for indoors and outdoors, would be to use something like the Modlite PHLv2 for inside/general use and use an Modlite OKW for a dedicated outdoor light.

I just bought a scout specifically because they make a tape switch that will work with the light and my DBAL laser at the same time.

My vote is replace. Modlights are all the rage. I'd buy one if I could.

I'm poor (due to having too many hobbies ) so I still use a G2X or 6PX on everything. I don't have any cool pictures to sway your decision.

Lights are pretty much Numero uno accessory on everything I own, so I can't justify $300-400 on each one...but if I had the money, better believe Modlights or the OWLs would be on all of them.

How much do those malkofs run? They are out of stock, so no pricing.

I'm running a modlite plhv2 and it works well indoors although it's pretty bright so practice is definitely necessary. Before jumping the gun and going cloud defensive or modlite think about if you want to go to rechargeables or not. They are amazing for training but it's very expensive to stock up on a bunch of 18650 batteries vs cr123a for a shtf, bugout, or whatever you want to call that loadout. Plus your "duty handgun" probably runs cr123... So the battery system wouldn't match your rifles light...

Not a wrong answer to go modlite / C.D. just mess I've been debating lately myself on ditching my modlite for a surefire to use cr123's again
