Lol. How much to set this thing in pieces. I bought a Toro from a member her with a locked up engine, replaced it with a running Kohler just like it but with a few more horses. This thing will not stay running. Cleaned carb, checked solenoid, changed and put on a known good carb, two different coils, new fuel pump, new plug, etc. Runs absolutely great one minute, and won't even crank 10 minutes later. But it comes and goes. No rhyme or reason. Clean fuel, check, gas cap clean and not plugged up, check, and the list goes on. So, I'm about ready to set this thing into space, haha. It's really a good thing I don't live out in the country. I told Kelly I would have already lit this thing on fire and shot it up with a dang shotgun.

Be careful there's a video of a guy doing that and like loosing a leg or something. I can't really remember it's been a while.

Oh I'm not really going to do it, but it was a thought, haha.

Possible wiring harness/ key switch open or short.
Did you try supplying a B+ supply to the ignition system via a jumper and see if it’ll run?

Wiring power supply short or a grounding short.

Don't use the machine switches or wiring. Go direct off the engine with a switch and start button,
If it runs there, you'll have to hand over hand the mower wiring harness to find the culprit.

The below is on a Hustler Raptor with a v twin kohlor engine.

Double check your fuel bowl solenoid. I had a similar problem and it pissed me off for the longest time.

Tore everything apart, cleaned it and what not and was ready to throw the thing in to a lake.

Finally after more digging, and testing it is an fuel bowl solenoid. Never fixed it hasn’t gave me problems for a few months now.

But i leave the key on for a few minutes so if it is still sticking a bit it gives it a little time to do what it does

When it won’t start will it start on starting fluid? Have you tried cranking it with the cap off the tank?

When it doesn't run.... pull the plug with the wire attached. Have someone turn the key and see if there is spark. You can do similar with a fuel line to see if fuel is getting to the engine. You can remove the air filter to see if's getting air...

That covers fuel/fire/air.

Have you checked to see if seat safety switch if it has one causing you problems. Usually can be jumpered out easily. Brother had one on a zero turn that got real flakey before it went out.

Dont mess with all this. I have plenty of Southern Thunder ill bring over, way less hassle

Ok, here we go.
I have tried the gas cap off, on, doesn't make a difference.
Have checked fuel bowl solonoid, and it is working, as far as I can tell. It could be intermittent though possibly. First I checked power, and confirmed with multi meter.
It will run if gas is squirted in with a small squeeze bottle.
But, if you pull fuel lines, it's getting fuel.
I did pull plug and confirmed spark.
Did not check any relays or safeties for issues.
It has me irritated enough that I may take it somewhere and let them look at it.
I'm not very well versed on mowers, but man, have fuel, spark, but it only runs when IT wants to run.

Had an inline filter on it. Changed it, and even tried without, no go.
It's not a hot/cold deal. Yesterday, it ran fine cold and hot, then just went to crap and hasn't run since, lol. I even took it to a dude that does a bunch of mower work, and he was stumped. That's where I picked it up from yesterday, running like a champ. I didn't touch a thing, get it home (1 mile), and it ran great until it didn't, then hasn't started since.

interesting

don't know much about mowers.

what's the ignition system like? sometimes bad ignition coils can spark intermittently.

Make sure you have the right fuel filter, there are two types for small engines; one for vacuum fuel pumps and one for mechanical fuel pumps. If the mower has a vacuum fuel pump, a mechanical fuel filter won't flow enough to keep it running under load.

If that checks good, cut the shaft off the solenoid so it can no longer push up to cut the fuel off. Pull the connector off and tape it up/zip tie it out of the way. You will need to add a manual fuel shut off valve afterwards and turn it off/on when needed.

There's a reason they tell you about a minimum safe distance.
