Made a quick stop at the Korean grocery store near our house to buy a few food items. In a few minutes I was ready to go at the shortest check out line with only one lady in front of me. But she had a full cart. Lots of the overpriced meat items, exotic fruits, snacks...None of the reasonably priced vegetables I usually get from there. Tallied up to $360 and change. Then I heard the word "EBT" and I understood. I'll probably eat like a king if I'm spending someone else's money.

Yeah had a high end dog breader get charged with food stamp and medicade fraud around 20k worth in 3 years. They sold puppies for 10k each trained and had a two year waiting list.

My oldest stepson tried to turn in his neighbors for attempting to sell him several cards they had. He hated their sorry asses too, and wasn't being just a snitch. Local gov had absolutely no interest in pursuing.

You have to call DSS and ask for the fraud investigator. The police department won’t do those charges.

That's what he did. He called the state agency in charge and they gave zero F's.

The state doesn't really care,,as the EBT system gets larger so do they.

The state actually allocates the money to the counties and the county is in control and the county grows. But also the investigators only are so few in numbers it is hard for them to keep up. In my county iirc there is around 170k residents the 12th largest county in NC and three DSS fraud investigators. I’ve been told when they get thier references they only get about 15-20 minutes to review each case looking for obvious fraud. There are so many obvious fraud cases they don’t have enough time to dig deeper. They get most of their references from places like the ESC and Department of revenue. Most of the time people try to cheat both on taxes and DSS and it goes against each other directly so the two will almost always figure it out.

And if the allocated money is not used up thier budget gets cut for the next year. The Bureaucrats at the top won't let this happen. Catching abuser isn't in thier best interest to keep the money flowing.

Food stamps should be for milk, bread, eggs, cheese, bologna, canned meats, beanie weanies, and the bare essentials. Not steak, shrimp, lobster, candy, soda, or ice cream. In my opinion it's for helping out when youre in between jobs, injuried, or disabled. The bad part is, they hardly ever get the help, it all goes to the drug dealers, non working that don't try to work, and illegals. Sad really.

Exactly. Whether the lady got the ebt legally or not is not the point. It's the welfare system that's crooked. I'm all for helping out the needy. But I don't like to see people splurging my money while I'm pinching pennies.

News story on cnbc, dude in California had ebt, lived with friends each week, he would buy lobster, shrimp and steak.
He was proud of himself, dumb enough to be in the story.
All legal.

This. However, they care greatly if the recipient moves out of state, but is still collecting from North Carolina. That is money that should be footed by the new state of residence.

My wife goes to the grocery store with a calculator and plans out our meals for the week while others just throw anything and everything into the cart without thinking about the price. Then after they pay with the ebt they go outside and put the food in the back of a new suv or car. Not to mention the nice clothes and shoes they wear. I think there should be tighter regulations on who gets what and how much. Something I forgot to mention earlier is that if you have a vehicle that costs/is worth more than $10,000 in your drive way, you don't need any help whatsoever. That should disqualify you immediately. Another no brainer- if you are able but don't or haven't kicked in you don't get to partake. That goes for ebt, Medicade, or any government help paid for by tax payers.

I guess I'm not on the popular side of the issue, but I don't mind what people get with EBT as long as it's not being used illegally or fraudulently.

Milk, bread, lobster, cake....I don't care. It's none of my business, personally. I'm not for goverment restrictions on what people choose to eat.

However, I strongly agree that there should be limits in terms of duration, etc. It's not meant to last forever and should be used as wisely as possible.

That's actually the exact circumstances where I last my last trace of willingness to support government handouts. While working at Walmart Mart no less.

Without fail, they always get into a nice car, probably financed out their ears too.

This is not govt's job.

I have two nieces and two nephews that either work for or have worked for Harris Teeter. Man, the stories they can tell about EBT fraud/abuse.

I never, ever go to a grocery store, but I did, once, a few months ago, and the lady in front of me did the same thing as described: high-end food, etc., whipped out the EBT. Just to screw with her, I filmed it, and loudly said "I am filming this to put on facebook to show the rampant fraud and abuse of tax dollars." I was looking to get her riled up, and I did. She didn't say anything but she gave me the stink eye and flipped me the bird. I laughed and just deleted the video (she didn't know I deleted it).

I think there needs to be an EBT-specific store: basic foods and necessities. Whole Foods should be a no-go.

YESSSSS. If you are living of us/the gov, you get bare basics. From a gov store.
Need to bring back the commodity lines. Give them cheese, peanut butter, milk, flour, lard, ect instead of cash. If you do that it will fix the abuse real quick.

I watched a lady pile up food from 2 buggy's and it was almost $400. Payed with ebt.... I put my stuff up there, food for a week, it was $55... Can't afford much more. Lady got pissed when I asked her to pay for mine with my tax money she was spending. It's insane. It should be like it was, you get coupons for certain things ( milk, bread, meat etc) not a dang card that lets you buy anything you want. Wayyyyy to many people on the system for wayyyyy too long.

What really gets me pissed is watching them load up a cart and use a ebt card then whip out cash to to pay for cigs and beer.

I've seen this too...but I've also seen people use their card to buy someone else's food in exchange for cash because they needed diapers and the card doesn't cover those. There will always be people who game the system no matter what system you put in place. I've learned to tolerate that knowing that the system is actually helping somebody out there.

The diaper thing reminds me what Chris Rock said "A black woman that got 2 kids, going to work everyday busting her ass hates bitches with 9 kids on welfare. Bitch! Stop f**king, put the d**k down. Get a job holding d**k. Whatever you do, get paid to do it.”
