I am one thankful essobie today. When you have a brush with losing everything important, it puts life into perspective real quick. Had one of those 'shit just got real' moments this week.

Some of you have met my 16 year old son Cameron. He's basically my doppleganger except for he has his mom's ginger looks. Otherwise he's all piss and vinegar and sarcasm just like his old man. And a better shot.

My youngest is much the same, but a bit more sensitive, more honest and caring. In other words he looks like me but he is more of his Mom's in spirit.

Cameron is 16 and a half, but he just got his drivers license. He's had his permit for ayear. We have really tried to get him all the seat time that we possibly could, and I tried like hell to get him into Doug Herbert's B.R.A.K.E.S. driving school. We did the same with my older daughter and she has done very well on the road.
He has about 250 hours driving experience, in various cars new and old, he can drive my 5 speed truck, and our urban assault Suburban equally well. I am not scared to ride with him anywhere, so it was getting to the point where I was confident enough to let him drive on I-40 home from the TN mountains last weekend.

He actually is going to be attending that school in October (I've been trying since April to get him in there!).

So last May I found him a decent used car, a 98 Honda Accord EX V6 loaded up with equipment, and miles.
We put some money in it (new tires, brakes, CV axles, etc etc) but still had a reasonable amount of money despite all that work. He put most of the new parts on it with me supervising. I posted here about the timing belt fiasco. Anyhow, it was his first car and he was proud of it. I drove the snot out of it to work to make sure it was really reliable.

Wednesday night we attended services like always, and even though I urged Cam to ride with us, he's a new driver with his own car, and he's had his license for a month. He drove separately by himself. Since provision licensees have to be home by 9PM, he left a bit before us around 8:30PM and took his brother with him.
We felt confident in him since he had made this trip before, and with us dozens of times already.

Cellphones were muted, and I usually kept mine on vibrate. However, 10 minutes after they left, my wife got a feeling and checked her phone. My youngest son was calling her, and so she stepped out to take the call.
About 30 secs later, I check mine and see that my oldest son has texted me that they were in an accident.

This is an absolute worst case nightmare for a parent, but since they both had contacted us, I knew that they were alive and able to communicate. My wife was in a panic, and we arrived at the scene in less than 10 minutes after it happened.

He was on a 4 lane hwy and had his cruise set on 60 ( I have stressed to him that we cannot afford any speeding violations since we have 2 teen drivers) which on that car means he was going around 55MPH.

Another provisional driver, a girl, in a Mini convertible, rolled the stopsigbon a side street, hesitated, and then pulled right out in front of him in the left lane.

Cameron said that he knew they were going to hit, and so he stood on the brakes as hard as he could. I'm not sure anybody could have done anything faster/better, and so he thinks they collided around 40MPH.

Anyhow, here are the results:

Both cars are a total loss. Hondas 5 star frontal crash rating is no joke. Mini makes a fine vehicle as well.

Boys are very sore, but the girl left in an ambulance. Prob neck related from side airbags. It couldve been much worse

Wow, I'm really happy to hear they're all okay. It worries me to think mine will one day be driving too. Best we can do is teach em best we can amd keep em lifted in prayer. Glad they're okay.

Glad he's OK. That's a very clean looking interior, by which I mean thanks to the airbag, no mechanism of injury and no intrusion. Could have been much worse.

I'm so glad everybody got to go home safely.

Glad your boys are ok, ikarus. I understand what you're feeling...my son totaled three vehicles in his first two years of driving.

A drivers door hit is my biggest fear. That could have been very ugly for the young lady.

Glad to hear all is relatively good and ok.

Glad they are ok. I hope her insurance buys him a 2017 Honda Accord!
We have an ambulance chas...er attorney already on the case. Somehow i doubt we will get much more than a few grand but the accident report was 100% in our favor. The only statement given was his, and his brother is another witness

I am glad they are ok. Hopefully he has learned you can never be too careful. There are many distracted idiots out there.

Me too. Mini must put some serious reinforcement because the drivers footwell wasnt even encroached upon. Plus she had the top down so the curtain bags worked phenomenally. Pretty sure anothee foot to the rear of impact spot and it would have been much worse than it was for the girl. Seat belts save lives, bags save bones, and crumple zones save organs. I am a big believer in safety tech

yeah, dont do that. That will make your heart skip., and cold sweats. You know her parents are doing that .

I see a '85 volvo s70 in her future
Haha I got a Suburban to sell em if they want a big safe cage.

So....the car search is on. I think I have found something he will like

Man, I'm glad to hear that your boys were okay. I don't know the feeling from your end, but I've been in the opposite spot before, getting a call that my dad and brother were in a head-on collision (everyone turned out okay there too).

Hope everything gets sorted out with insurance in short order.

You can be in a bad accident even if you are doing everything right. Gotta stay vigilant in LIFE.

Dang brother. Glad everyone was ok, that's definitely some scary stuff. Like worst nightmare kind of scary stuff.

Glad everyone is safe.

Glad everyone is safe. I was in 2 accidents when I was 16. Neither time was my fault, both times were in trucks. One was a woman turned right across my lane from the left hand lane to get into a parking lot and I hit her about 40.

The second accident ended with my dads truck off the road while I tried to maintain it, into a ditch and it rolled over.

Nobody was injured in either accident and this was the days before cell phones so I had to walk somewhere and call my parents and the police both times.

My point is (I just realized I wasn't really making one) is that at the time I thought nothing of either accident. Stuff happens, it wasn't my fault and everybody was ok. Never understood my parents controlled hysteria (You could feel it but they didn't show it).

Now that I have a son, I realize just how freaked I would be from something like this.

Glad they are both OK. Sounds like the lad did good, if he had been distracted it could have been much worse and still not his fault.

I look forward to autonomous vehicles, which would really reduce the likelihood of this kind of accident.
Great while it's voluntary, but it I predict it will soon become illegal to drive/own your own vehicle once much is made of the number of lives saved. Personally I'll take the increased risk and keep my autonomy, but I don't think there is much I/we can do to stop it.

Yeah i cried man. Makes me upset still thinking about it. Those kids are my world.

So now theyre joking about it, claiming "special status" since they survived lol.
I told em they get to meet the chiro 3x a week for free, and he "might" have another ride by the time school starts.

I don't see a drop of blood, and that's always good news. I'm sure the kids are more than shaken up, and will probably be a bit sore for a day or two, but glad to see everyone is unscathed for the most part.

While an attorney is definitely a good idea, chances are, what they take in fees will end up equating to "I should have just handled this myself." At least it means you're not the one tied up on the phone with the insurance company and whatnot.

Again, glad to see all those safety features worked!

Yeah we have used this guy before when my wife was rear ended. Mostly loss of wages, rental car for a month, and the chiro visits.

I negotiated with the other parties' car insurance myself and got them to pay more than they wanted for the car. They ended up paying off a high-mileage-for-model-year financed car and giving me a check [emoji38]

This time, with a 280K miles car that was paid for, and 2 victims I figure let him get his 3rd and everything above and beyond can go into the community funds.

Glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been. My oldest turns 12 in October and I am already worrying.

Just think of how the auto insurance industry will be evicersted and how many traffic cops will be out of work. The states will get less graft money from traffic violations...

Glad everyone made it out OK. I'm sure that all three kids are in much better shape than their parents.

That is for darn sure. Some years back I was taking the kids to karate. Woman lost control, ended up coming straight across my lane. I was doing about 55 in my lifted YJ. A fraction of a second either way would have sent her Honda spinning into more traffic. Her Honda held up pretty well as far as protecting her.

Glad they are ok. My daughter is 16 and dying to get her license. She just isn't a natural driver or very observant so we are making her wait and drive as much as we can. She is getting better, and she is very cautious so hopefully once she gets more experience she'll be safe. IMO 16 is too young. These kids don't have the maturity or experience. I see her friends and our neighbors driving like idiots all the time.

Second thing I give my wife crap all the time about using cruise control on roads with intersections or lights. IMO it isn't safe. Mentally and physically you just aren't as quick to react when cruise is on. Save it for the big highways please.

Edit: oh, my daughter got bumped at a stop sign the other day on the way to work. Wife was in the car. Guy behind them gets lut apologizing and says he's driving a stick shift and on the phone so he had trouble stopping. What a freaking moron. No damage to the car or people so all is good, but I wish I was there to verbally assualt that guy.

My heart skipped a beat when I first saw this. Glad they're all OK. Been there, done that too. Had twins. One drove, the other didn't (he got beautiful girls to drive him). I get that call. 2 miles from the house he had over-compensated running off the edge of the road, rolled it, took out two trees and when I got there the Lexus was on it's side on the passenger side. We had bought it used for my wife and then she got a new car so the kid got the car. I show up and he's being treated by a paramedic. His twin is lying on the ground with two paramedics working on him and blood all over his face. I knew he was dead and rushed over. He hears my voice and opens his eyes and smiles at me. It's just lots of blood from the scalp laceration. I was so thankful they were both wearing seatbelts, on a secondary road and only doing 45. After the Highway Patrol FINALLY showed up and made a report we had the car towed off (totaled) and the kids came home with me. No injuries other than some minor bleeding and the paramedics said if they had any problems to get them to the ER. I know what you mean about "special status" they think they have. He's now totaled three vehicles and -I think- has finally gotten the idea that safe driving is a plus, especially with his wife in the car. The last car he totaled was a used SHP Charger. Tire blew out on I-40 in Johnson County and he took out the guard rail cable in the median. Had to attend MANDATORY driver's ed (JoCo DA's requirement for ANY driver under 21) even though he was just passing through from Camp Lejeune to home. Plus we had to pay to replace/repair the guard rail cable section. But again, no personal injuries, thank God!

I don't know what they teach in driver's ed nowadays, but it's apparently not much. One thing my son has told me (he's taken the remedial driving course 3 times) is that the course they have in Wilmington is the best he's ever seen. It was required that one parent attend the first two hours of the course so I had to drive down for that. It starts out with a dad talking to everyone about his son's driving experience and that while most of these kids would be attending college for the next four years that his son was doing four years in prison for vehicular manslaughter. It was very sobering to hear his story. Then the driving portion that actually had a firetruck come out and wet down the school parking lot so the kids could drive and recover from a hydroplane. Plus they had a impact sled you rode in to see the impact on your body in an accident while wearing a seatbelt. Very impressive course, I thought. But I think that is a private remedial course only taught in Wilmington. He knows Orange and Johnson County courses are different.

Yes, the driver's ed class sucks. My daughter couldn't safely pull into a parking spot forward or backward when she was done. And she never learned a 3 point turn. I have been working on those things with her. And she is signed up for the Brakes class so hopefully she'll keep getting better.

I highly recommend B.R.A.K.E.S. school they hold at the Zmax dragway. When we took it, I thought I understood about Doug Herberts loss of his 2 sons, but this near miss really has me thinking about him now.

They let my wife and I take the course the same as the kids do. I drove that little Forte like I stole it. One of the courses runs you off the road onto the gravel and back onto the pavement. If you do it right, then the car doesn't upset. Do it wrong and you can spin that sucker out easily. I knew from raising hell as a child on dirt roads that the last thing you want to do is jerk the wheel. I let off the gas and steered it back on like a pro.

Wife actually wrecked a brand new Dodge Avenger (POS!) that way. She over-corrected and put that sucker end over end into a cornfield. Nothing grew in that spot for YEARS due to the oil gas and coolant leaks :D

Honestly I have never wrecked as bad as these boys did in a car. I did go over the handlebars and a car on a bike and do a lawndart splat on the pavement, and managed to walk away mostly unscatched. That was my mulligan in life, and one reason why I don't ride any more. 2 more reasons were in that car on Wed night.

But yeah the school is well worth the $99 donation, and you learn more in 4 hours with those instructions than you could in years of regular driving. They do a wet skid recovery on pavement, ABS lock up, ABS lock up steering around cones, and the over-correction course. It's some of the best time you can get for a young driver.

However none of that helps when someone 'fails to yield' and runs out in front of you. BTW she was the only one to receive a citation. I hope they gave her a blood test as well in the hospital.

Great news for the family! I always bought $1 mil liability for my son's cars. You just never know what circumstances work themselves out in an accident. As for myself, I'm more cautious than ever at intersections. If I have the right of way, I don't always assume that the other driver gives a hoot about right of way.

I put 3 teens in cars and thank God they all survived. Only one crash among them with no major injuries. I am Glad all these young people are all going to be OK.
