Well... there you have it. When you've hit rock bottom in life with literally weeks to live, there's nothing like the government coming along and making your last few weeks Hell.

I get the safety thing... but when a man is literally on "any amount of drugs necessary to control the pain of a terminal patient", this is TOTALLY asinine.

Police raid hospital room of terminally ill patient

But but but we’re a nation of LAWS!!

my Mom (in OR) uses cannabis for her back pain. Ive seen first hand that she gets relief where OTC pharma doesn’t work and without using opioids. Why this stuff is still on the list is beyond me.

Yet the violent criminals continue to quickly get recycled back to the skreets.
I get it for fire reasons, just take the vape, or give him a safe place to use it.
What the hell is wrong with the f'n hospital employee(s)??? He wasn't infringing on ANYONE else's rights.

1)- Nixon's stupid War on Drugs that has caused much more harm than good, and has bled our wallets in wasted taxation, with zero upside.
2)- DuPont's lobbying congress to make cannabis illegal. Why? So they would have a monopoly on the rope market after they invented Nylon. Think about just the sale to shipyards.

With the alcohol stats on violence and drunk driving vs weed blood loss, you'd think they'd sell weed at the gubmint monopoly ABC stores instead of booze.

Agree, police action was not warranted but why is the terminally ill patient in the hospital since his doctor believes that THC is a way to alleviate his suffering….Maybe poor written article on why the patient has to be in the hospital.

Bretz was cited for drug possession and is set to appear in court after the new year on January 2nd, 2023.

seriously?

He should call an ambulance and go, make 'em wait on him and do whatever it takes for him to attend his hearing. Tell 'em to send all the bills to him, he'll pay in 30 days.

How should he plead?

After all the fanfare of getting there, he could plead Guilty and piss 'em off, but it's all the cops' doing.

Or, he could plead Not Guilty and argue long and loud, risking being held in contempt, and getting a jail sentence. That might be exciting as his last adventure.

Good point... but they still used a hammer when a gloved hand would suffice.

The reason it is on the list to begin with - big pharma doesn’t want to compete with it.

Edited to add - big tobacco didn’t like it, either. And someone else above mentioned du Pont.

Don’t imagine any of the paper companies are fond of it either.

I was born & raised in KS & it was a great place to grow up, but crap like this is one of the many reasons I stopped just this side of the MO/KS state line when we moved back.

To be fair, the hospital was between a rock and a hard place. Because the government would HAPPILY throw them under the bus as well, had they found out about it (the use of an illegal drug in the hospital) and the hospital had done nothing.

And the hospital staff closest to the patient (read: lowly nursing staff) would have been gleefully sacrificed in a heartbeat to save the hospital. Law enforcement could have had a hayday with civil asset forfeiture, for example.

And an illegal drug charge in that line of work is a "terminal illness" for future employability, so this was absolutely no joke for the nursing staff.

I've been thinking about this all day, since I posted the thread, and the more I think about it, the more I wonder if this isn't a setup to put the state behind the 8-ball on this and get them hot on the path to "legalizing" marijuana.

Quotation marks because so far there isn't a state in the Union which has "legalized" marijuana. The best any have done is set the government up as the sole legal drug pusher while still giving law enforcement plenty of drug statutes they had use to continue raking cash in over marijuana.

Ah...an update!

Police dismiss ticket issued to Kansas cancer patient found vaping in hospital room

HAYS, Kan. (KSNW) — The Hays Police Department and Hays Medical Center are receiving threats after an article that the police chief is calling “misleading.”

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler says a mischaracterization of this incident as a “raid” resulted in the story being spread worldwide. That being said, the son of the man at the center of this case says more needs to be done in Kansas to help terminally ill patients.

“Kansas really needs to legalize medical marijuana and help those who actually need it,” Lee Bretz, the son of 69-year-old Greg Bretz, said.

Chief Scheibler says that on Dec. 19, officers were called to HaysMed after staff caught Greg using THC-infused products in his hospital room.

“They were concerned about the potential fire hazard, but more importantly, they were also concerned about how it made him feel sick,” Chief Scheibler said.

Lee says his father is terminally ill—his cancer is now inoperable.

“So the chemo hadn’t been too kind to him, so he’s been exploring some other options, and it seemed to be helping him out a little bit, but that all went south when he got turned in by one of the hospital staff,” Lee said.

The hospital confiscated those products before turning them over to the police. Although Greg was not arrested, he was issued a ticket.

“The officer, as he was leaving the building, he didn’t feel comfortable writing the ticket,” Chief Scheibler said. “That day, the officer sent an email to the city prosecutor requesting that the charge be dismissed.”

Due to the holidays, that charge was dismissed on Tuesday, eight days after the initial incident. However, Lee says it’s just not enough.

“Well, it makes me feel good, but it still don’t stop the fact that, you know, the damage is done to him,” Lee said. “We just want the best for our loved ones, you know.”

Chief Scheibler says while the conversation surrounding medical marijuana must continue, he emphasizes the officers involved acted in accordance with state and city law.

“We shouldn’t have laws on the books that we don’t want enforced, and if we want us to be compassionate, if we want us to help people, we have to address this issue in some fashion,” Chief Scheibler said.

As for those threats, the Hays Police Department says it isn’t concerned of any immediate danger but is keeping an eye on the situation.

There are some links in the story about the push for Kansas to legalize MJ, but I didn't include them.

I'm thinking this story is gonna help them on this.

Yes, and Nazis, KGB/GRU, Khmer Rouge, the CCP, the Norks, etc all acted, or act, in accordance with “the law”. It’s not a good enough excuse and you’re just as guilty of wrong doing as those who declared “law”.

Or he could tell them to go suck an egg.
