It's just not Texas, there are several other free states where guns are part of the lifestyle. The Washing Post reporter must not get out too much.

Most days in the TX legislature I’m pretty sure the members are carrying more guns than the state troopers assigned to the capitol. They don’t have the M16s of course, just talking handguns.

Try to find the full article if you can. Full of fear and anxiety looking at an AR-15

She got her CCW and even spent the week at gunsite

Still she was scared

I understand the author’s shock at gun ownership in Texas. Afterall, in DC, there’s no reason for citizens to be armed.

That was definitely one of the first things that came to my mind. I still have PTSD after just reading about him firing an AR
The best part?
When it’s obvious he is right handed and was not firing a left handed AR, but claims the brass was flying in front of his face.

Shocker! Some people prefer to defend themselves rather than rely on a piece of paper in a law book to protect their lives. Who woulda' thunk it!

100%…Gene Pitney summed it up…

From out of the east a stranger came,
A law book in his hand, a man,
The kind of a man the west would need
To tame a troubled land;
Cause the point of a gun was the only law
That liberty understood.

When the final showdown came at last,
A law book was no good.

* That movie is on Grit TV tonight at 8:00.

I went to the WP website and was able to read the original article

I visited the Alamo in December of 2021. As the line got closer to the entrance I noticed a sign listing prohibited items and got concerrned. I had looked for restrictions online and did not find any so I was carrying. I thought for sure the sign would list guns. It turned out to be cameras, flashlights, sodas, anything that could in any way damage the frail old place. Only in Texas! Anywhere else that sign would have had guns listed.

One thing I loved in Texas was the 30.06 & 30.07 signs. The .06 is "no concealed carry" and the .07 is "no open carry". They had to be posted in English and Spanish very visibly at all entrances, the text had to be exactly correct, the coloring high contrast and the lettering at least an inch tall. If anything was wrong, they had no power. Basic "no guns" signs had no power. So you just ignored anything that wasn't correct, and you didn't patronize any business that actually posted a 30.06 sign.

I've lived in NC, TX, NH, MA. Of all places the attitude towards guns was more liberal, in order, : NH, NC, TX.

People always talk about texas being a super gun place, but i don't know when that's been true. I didn't get into the gun world until the early 2000s, but texas was behind the curve on gun laws. as far as i know they still kind of are. and as far as i knew at the time, they were even before then (reference luby's massacre)

Historically, Texas never really lived up to it's reputation as a "guns everywhere" state. Within the last few years, they've caught up on some issues, such constitutional carry, open carry and protecting the 2A rights of 18-20 year olds. Even in Texas, the most violent, crime ridden places are the Democrat strongholds like Houston and Dallas. (Although the Mayor of Dallas just switched parties to the GOP!) No carry in restaurants changed after Luby's. No carry in Church changed after the Sutherland Church shooting. Texas may be getting there slowly, but at least their response to tragedies has been to allow the public to protect themselves, rather than to further restrict the public's rights, like in blue states.

TX was surprisingly a little late to the game on a couple things. I was living there when the open carry law went into effect ( Jan ‘16). And they just got constitutional carry couple years back. Aside from those, which were remedied, what is TX currently behind the curve on?

I lived in TX before and I would definitely agree that the “gun culture” there is very strong. Lots of excellent ranges, the competitive shooting sports scene is thriving, some of, if not the, best castle doctrine/self defense laws in the country and there are a ton of companies in the industry based out of TX. There is also HB 957 which removes the threat of STATE prosecution for making/possessing suppressors that are made in TX (you could still face federal, and there hasn’t been a “test case” as of yet, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction).

Where in TX were you living? I’be lived in both and I would not concur that NC has a more liberal attitude toward guns than TX. I would wager than you would not be able to find a list or ranking anywhere that would have NC listed even in the top 10 of most gun/2A friendly states.

They were slow on a couple things (se my post above) but the “gun culture” there is STRONG.

I didn't know their advances over the past handful of years. I stopped paying attention to their stuff because i don't ever go there. glad to hear they got better.
