I have a nephew (my first oldest nephew) and my wife asked me what we should give him as a grad gift.

First thought in my mind: I'll give him a rifle, along with several pmags and 100rds of ammo.

Before this gets leaked to the media and I get featured in a negative light:

My nephew is a Jr ROTC squad leader, cross country team captain at his (as well as my wife, my own, and his families) high school, and a general all around great American kid.

He wanted to join the Marine Corps fresh out of High School, but thankfully(hopefully) he wants to go to college. So he enlisted in the Army Reserves, and ships out to Ft Benning at the end of June just after his 18th birthday.

My first thought was he needs to practice with irons so he can try and make Expert.

His family really helped us out last year with my daughters' graduation, with my brother-in-law cooking nearly all night to make around 80lbs of smoked pulled pork. And it was absolutely delicious.

So I will post some pics up in the coming weeks of a nice kid with his first AR15 :D

PSA upper 1:7 Nitride middy 16"
PSA premium BCG bolt was HPT/MPI
PSA classic complete lower
Magpul MOE stock and MBUS

Trigger was bad 8+lbs until I smoothed it out some by hand cycling the hammer and dry firing. Terrible still but 7.5lbs is better than it was.

Anyhow its his to modify to taste

I threw in 2 new pmags, plus a metal D&H, 100rds of xm193, a boresnake and a bottle of CLP.

I will go one further ... the Ruger American Ranch Rifle AR mag style. That little booger is about as handy a rifle as you can get. It’s got a free floated 16” 1:8 twist threaded barrel, picatinny rail, very good adjustable triggering and all in 6 lb package for $450-475 street price! It is not a target rifle but with good ammo will hold 2 MOA easy and carry like a B.B. gun.

The .300BO version with suppressor is a blast to shoot ...

While I would love to do that one day, he isn't going to be qualifying in basic training with a bolt action... So that is why the basic M4gery will be perfect for his purposes

Misread you title ... I took the American Rifle as you meaning a Ruger American Rifle ...

np. Generally, gun-ignorant people like to say AR stands for Assault Rifle, most gun people know it's Armalite, and I tell people it stands for the American Rifle as denoted by popularity over the last decade ;)

Awesome...

I have one graduating from HS this year and he has taken a liking to my G19. He's done well with it on trips to the range and has demonstrated how to perform routine maintenance on the weapon.

Reckon it's time he had one with "his name on it".

Pics to come.

You literally could take nearly your entire original post and I could have written it. My oldest nephew is graduating this June, and he's getting this:

Colt Trooper (LE6920 with Centurion free float Mlok rail)
Aimpoint Pro. His ADM lower third mount is on order.
MBUS, Magpul furniture, going to add a Radian Raptor, Ambi Safety, and already have his Plano case to pluck once it's finished.

That's pretty nice, in fact, alot nicer that what Mike's getting. I'll let him dress it out as he sees fit.

What’s his MOS?

I went to the Benning School for Wayward Boys almost 15 years ago. 4th Plt, B Co, 2/58 Infantry. I still remember my roster number.

Getting familiar with the rifle is fantastic, but he needs to go in with a totally open mind when they start BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmanship) and learn it the way they teach it from Square One.

Keep us posted on training progress

Ha, he chose 25L aka Cable Dog. Guess that's a job that will actually translate to the civilian world. He does AIT at Ft Gordon.

I’m only an hour from Gordon, straight shot down 20. If you need a place to stash a carry piece when you go down for graduation (rather than on post carry) and pick it back up on the way home, or a place to crash over night, we have room, just holler

Thanks man!

Nice, I remember borrowing a friends SP1 a few times before I went to basic. I just built a AR15 for my grandson. Gathering parts for the twin granddaughters now.

It's a combined birthday and graduation gift and I figure he can keep it forever minus maybe a barrel swap, so it was worth the investment.

When I saw “marine” I thought I would share that Walmart had their Crayola 64 packs, you know the cool ones with the build in sharpener, for like $6 on sale.

Insult would have been more effective if you could have properly used "built" instead of "build".

Your comment would have been more effective if I valued your opinion on the matter.

Lmao now kids, don't pigeon strut all over my chess board
I'll go poop all over someone else's game :)

Seriously though, I had to do a triple take when reading your original post last night because I thought "man, this is too crazy to be happening at the same time I'm doing Jake's rifle!" Great minds think alike!

One thing is for sure, I know who the favorite uncles are around here :D

I was always his favorite uncle, mainly because I think to this day I am still his only uncle! But I also never let him beat me in basketball until he COULD beat me in basketball. Now he's 18, 6'1", with a jump shot that should have earned him scholarship offers from mid-majors. Meanwhile I'm 33 and fighting every day to stay away from Bojangles and increasing my waist line!
