The sheer volume of SMs on WIC is absolutely astonishing. People with triple my TIS, higher grade and much higher pay are constantly telling me to go on WIC (they are themselves!). I tell them the ability to provide for my own family is my responsibility alone, and if I can provide for their needs as well as their wants, there is absolutely no reason why I should be on WIC. I ask them where they think that money comes from, and their response is, "the government." I ask where they think the government gets that money, and rarely do they even have a response.

There is so much money for everything when you're a SM (DLA, special duty pay, re-enlistment bonus, COLA, BAS, FSP, etc.), I think they just view it as one extra bit of "free" money. It's pretty sad. All they use it for is so they can have extra money in their pocket to buy more crap. - I briefly thought about it for a second so I could take the "savings" and donate that on top of my tithe at church, but quickly came to the conclusion that it's still wrong.

Isn't WIC "Women infant children"?
Made to help with Formula and diapers?

So it's primarily the lower enlisted Catholics ?
Yes, that's what it stands for. I know senior enlisted on the teet.

Goes to more than just formula and diapers. Thanks to Moochelle, people are buying organic milk and eggs on it too. - Back in the day, I remember you could only get select items and usually the lowest quality.

Always makes me think back to the film Cinderella Man, when it took everything in him to accept the handout, and he was so ashamed of himself for doing it...and when he finally made some money, he paid it all back.

When I was in the USAF, the home was "off the military wanted you to have a family they would have issued it to you. "
I was single. Lived in the dorm on base. The paycheck went mostly to booze and drugs until I got sober. [emoji1787]
Members of the military are no different than any other American. One must live within one's means.
My young cousin got married while he was a Spec4 in the Army. His wife was finishing he bachelors. They waited until after he got out and she finished her degree to have a baby.

There's is not any reason why even an E1 would have to wait to have a child. There is plenty of money WITHOUT WIC to afford a good life. It all comes down to priorities and budget.

I don't have a problem accepting things like DLA, FSP, special duty, etc. - as it's earning associated with work. - WIC is absolutely not the same.

Sounds like a monthly bonus for having dependents.

The Military "awards" soldiers for having dependents.
Hate the game not the player.
Personally, I expect the senior NCOs to set the example.

My niece and her husband, who is now an e8 first shirt, have been married since they were teenagers. 4 kids. (>10 years she difference between the first 2 and second 2.) They managed to pull it off without "welfare."
When her husband retires in a couple years he will more than double his salary in the private sector. [emoji6]

I’ve mentioned this in other threads, but when I was in college a friend lived downstairs. He obtained sole custody of his son and tried to go to work and school only to wind up on academic probation. He went on the dole with the idea of finishing his engineering degree. One of the things he received was WIC. It was delivered twice a week. Milk, eggs, bread, peanut butter, govt. cheese, and generic Cheerios (sp?). Upstairs, we were pretty poor and he had more than enough so he shared.

I can attest to the fact that when you’re hungry, you would be grateful for generic cereal and peanut butter.

I was in the USAF in 1977 on... under President Carter, pay was lagging private sector so bad, we got instructed to apply for food stamps. We qualified but didn't actually take it, since the whole idea was to show Congress how tough things were. Didn't help until Reagan became president.
