I figured I should start a thread on this build. Most likely no one cares but it makes me feel good to post for no real reason :)

This build started out with me ordering a Tennessee arms polymer lower. I payed $39 for it. I know I can get a Anderson for that. I just wanted to see what this thing could take. I have 2 of the ATI 2nd gen polymer lowers and they are great.

This lower from TA has brass reinforcement on the rear where the buffer tube screws in. It does not go down into the lower like on a ATI does. Its just the ring for the threads. I don't think it can take much stress back there. We will see.

Pics of lower comparison

Now my objective for this build is to use as many parts as I can find in my parts bin as possible. I had to order a few small part( springs, mag catch etc) and a buffer tube. I also will have to buy a upper receiver, BCG and a handguard.

These are the parts I have laying around that will be going on this rifle. Knock off Magpul sights, cheap red dot that I had to fix with shoe goo, stock, grip, heavy bull 16" barrel 556 1/9 twist, jmt saber trigger, and extended take down pins.

After I get it together I will be doing some accuracy tests, and function test( water, dirt, mud etc) as well as putting some pressure on the lower to test it's strength. I interested in seeing what it does.

Oh and it will get spray can camo! ;)

Looking forward to the tests.

Go ahead get it together, shoot it a bit, stress test it, break the rear threads, buy an Anderson lower, and reassemble! Kidding (kinda), I actually hope it doesn't break so you didn't waste money.

What's your dollar goal to stay under? I'd order a toolcraft BCG for $86. That and a clearance ballistic advantage or Faxon barrel for $75 or so would be great no matter what.

@JRHorne

I really don't have a set $$ goal just build it cheap as possible to get a functioning rifle :)

Also if you look in the pics you can see just how much more material there is on the ATI vs the TA. The ATI is over build while the TA looks like a direct copy of a forged lower. I work in the injection molding field ( over 8 years experience so far) and the finishing on the TA was bad. I spent 30 mins with small files cleaning up the mold lines and the drilled holes.

Tag for interest. Good luck with the build. I just assembled two Anderson lowers with parts out of my bin yesterday. Now just need some uppers and BC. These guns are going to the grandkids.

I think I have one polymer lower in the safe along with a collection of Andersons. I've thought of doing exactly what you're doing, so I want to see how this goes for you. Given that you probably won't be breeching any doors with the buttstock, it may well be a winner!

Finally got this thing together.... Sorry for the wait for those that care :)

Found a good deal on a upper receiver and a cheap handguard. Using a BCG out of my SPR ATM till next payday when I can buy a BCG just for this.

Got the first coat of paint on it just a few minutes ago. Going to camo it :)

Could you possibly tell us how to do a camo paint job? I might just try it on my beater 7.62x39 build.

All I do is apply a good base coat ( normally olive drab). Then get you some natural sponges and paper plates. Spray your paint on to the plate making a small pool. Get the sponge loaded and just dab away on the rifle all over. Repeat with all the colors you want and till you get what you are looking for. I normally go lighter colors to dark with black being last. Normally takes about a hour total not counting dry time.

You can get all the supplies you need from Walmart for about $25 and can do several rifles. The sponges are in the arts and crafts section. I use Rust-Oleum paints most of the time. Best part is the more worn it gets the better it looks ;)
