If you believe you're playing well because you're getting l@!d, or because you're not getting l@!d, or because you wear women's underwear, then you *are*! And you should know that!

So, like the Chief, I keep a folder of quotes I particularly like. These are from page 1.

So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.

Jesus Christ

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

Galileo Galilei

No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says: He is always convinced that it says what he means.

George Bernard Shaw

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

H. L. Mencken

Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively.

All major religions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness. The important thing is that they should be part of our daily lives.

Anything Robert Heinlein ever said....

No statement should be believed because it is made by an authority

I was at a church conference several years ago, and wrote down a quote one of the speakers said, but failed to note who said it. Might have been John Piper. Regardless, it has stuck with me and really hits home when thinking about sharing the Gospel:

The goal of the Bible is not to make the world a better place to go to hell from.

From a similar background to yours - "To those who have accepted Christ's salvation: hold on tight; this world is as close to Hell you will ever be. To those who reject Christ, enjoy this world; it's as close to Heaven as you'll ever be."

Heinlein didn't think that one up:

Do not believe anything on the mere authority of teachers or priests. Accept as true and as the guide to your life only that which accords with your own reason and experience, after thorough investigation. Accept only that which contributes to the well-being of yourself and others.

Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.”

"The reward you get for digging holes is a bigger shovel."

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.”
Terry Pratchett, Jingo

My Dad, a very hard man...

'That's bound up tighter than a dog's touched hole.'

'Come here, I'll give you something to cry about.'

'I'll hit you so hard they'll have to shoot you to stop you from bouncing.'

As a 8yo this would lock you up with fear: 'Get me my belt.'
As a 15yo it caused me to walk away.

“To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.”
― Winston S. Churchill

Cherry blossoms in Spring. Stars cover the sky on Summer. Full moon shines on Autumn and in Winter, the snow covers the ground. All these things make sake taste good. If it tastes bad, it's because there is something wrong in you. Seijuro Hiko

A sword is a weapon. The art of swordsmanship is learning how to kill. That is the truth. What Miss Kaoru says is nothing but sweet and innocent talk, only those whose hands have never been stained with the blood of man can believe. Himura kenshin
