"The range is cold"

Ranges need 3 rules:

1) All guns being handled must be pointed downrange.
2) No handling of guns when there are people downrange.
3) All bullets must hit the berm.

Any additional rule is being made because people can't be bothered to understand and follow those 3.

A gun in a case is not being handled, the case is. Guns are not magic, cased and holstered guns do not fire on their own.

SCDNR ranges won't allow shooting steel.

Fortunately, I have a plan for that...

Apparently I would’ve been in the wrong at many places.

I think it comes from a fear that a new person approaching the line while others are shooting might startle them and cause them to turn towards you and sweep the rest of the line. Still covered by "All guns must be pointed downrange while being handled"

My favorite set of rules (big boy pants) was from Frank in Oxford:
1) Don't do anything stupid
2) Don't shoot up my stuff
We only have 2 rules here on The Rock... Number 1 is No writing on the walls and Number 2 is obey all rules....Barney Fife

From the responses here, yup, a "cold" range means whatever rules the administration decides on. Choose what yer comfortable with

not all rules but seem to apply here

Piedmont Handgunner’s Association Range Rules

1. Safe firearms handling is a prerequisite for the use of our range.

2. All firearms must be kept safe except when on the firing line or when carried on your person, open or concealed carry. Muzzles must be pointed in a safe direction at all times.

3. No firearms will be handled for any reason when anyone is forward of the firing line (COLD RANGE condition).

4. Any time the range is called cold, all firearms must be unloaded and benched, with magazines removed or bolts, slides, and cylinders open. Use of Empty Chamber Indicators (ECI) is highly recommended.

5. Every member is a Safety Officer and has the responsibility to politely remind someone about our rules should they observe an unsafe act or a safety violation. Do not act confrontational, but make a Board Member aware of the situation if the situation cannot be corrected in a professional manner.

6. PHA Range facilities are for PHA members and their guests (2 per member).

7. Range shooting hours are from 8:00 am until sunset, or until you can no longer safely see your target and the backstop. A member may come and go outside these hours.

8. All targets must be placed directly in front of the berms unless under the direction of a Match Director. Do not place targets between the firing point and the leading edge of berms since this can cause dangerous ricochets.

Indeed.

I have children, too, and they could be trusted 100% of the time when they were younger.

Trusted, that is, to be true to their nature as children. Which is a point many people don't understand.

Adults have the same issue, and people often forget that. Hence the term "trust, but verify".

Even when I'm on the range with people I know, I've always got an eye out...not because I don't trust them, but because I understand human nature and realize that even the best among us slip up occasionally.
So a gun is always loaded? 🤣

Why all this:
4. Any time the range is called cold, all firearms must be unloaded and benched, with magazines removed or bolts, slides, and cylinders open. Use of Empty Chamber Indicators (ECI) is highly recommended.

If this:
3. No firearms will be handled for any reason when anyone is forward of the firing line (COLD RANGE condition).

?

Is it for the feels? Guns aren't dangerous if they're not being handled.

So a gun is always loaded? 🤣

PEOPLE are always loaded!

And when people handle guns, the gun is to be CONSIDERED loaded until positively verified by the handler. To everybody else who hasn't personally verified this, it should be CONSIDERED loaded until THEY have personally verified this.

Guess I need to buy my first empty chamber indicator at some point.

Why all this:

If this:

Is it for the feels? Guns aren't dangerous if they're not being handled.

Maybe because people don’t follow rules so a little redundancy keep holes from getting put in flesh. Someone needs to break more than 1 rule to cause chaos.

Guess I need to buy my first empty chamber indicator at some point.

I got in the habit of using them when I shot at the Wake County range. They gave them out for free. I actually will use them when alone on a range now. Go figure, I’m like a trained puppy dog.

Ok- more clear- people are not shooting. Is this the right time to bring your guns from your car, or do you wait for people to start shooting?
If I am running a range, it means that you can bring guns from your car if they are holstered or in a case. Holstered guns stay in the holster and are not to be handled. Gun cases can be set on the bench, but not opened and any guns handled until the range is declared "hot" again.
