We moved not to long ago and I have walked a lot of the property and down by the pond is an old saw mill that my wife's grandfather set up. He moved it off the the property that he grew up on around the mid 60's to where it is at now. I started the project of cleaning it up and cutting out everything from around it. It looks to be intact and the old Oliver that ran it is sitting over on the woods behind it.

What are your plans for it? That's awesome.

I would love to see it run. I am trying to find someone that has experience and the right knowledge to tell me how everything works. I have figured out some of it just by messing with it. We have belt material floating around in one of the barns. If the Oliver isn't seized up i might go that route but it is it then maybe a pto off of the big tractor. I Need to source teeth for the blade, most of the bearings seem to be in great condition.

Looks like an old Frick or a Meadows.

The existing teeth should be able to be sharpened on the blade.

Whatever you do - DO NOT REMOVE ALL OF THE TEETH AT THE SAME TIME! Only remove a few before replacing them. If you remove them all the blade will lose it’s tension and will have to be sent to a saw shop for repair.

You can buy new teeth from Precision Saw in Polkton, NC.

Awesome, Thanks for the information. The teeth look to be in rough shape. I'll try to get a close up to provide more detail. Is there any way to get more detail on weather or not it's a Frick or meadows?

All I was thinking is it looks like a nice little structure. I haul the saw out and sell it. Then I'd put some cool outdoor benches or seating in there, and build a firepit with some grates back there. Looks like an excellent spot to host some friends for a few drinks and a meal.

When I was about 13, I was helping my grandpa off bearing at his sawmill. We finished a long log and then went to a short log. Ernie, the guy helping load the logs forgot to slide one of the log dogs back in since it was not being used with the short log. My grandpa ran the log through the saw and all of a sudden it sounded like full auto fire. Grandpa pulled the stick back as fast as he could but not before the saw almost went through the entire 3/4" thick steel log dog. The automatic fire was the rings and bits flying out and going through the tin roof. I was a very expensive mistake.

One of these days I'm going to have to drive over to your/you're/eeyore side of our town and beat your ass, or alternately have a beer. ...or both.

If we're going by size you just might beat my ass. Badly. But I am going to warn you, I'm a scrapper. And I can take a beating, and keep on ticking. And that all goes for the beer too. Maybe we should meet on neutral ground first. Then we can pick a time and place for duel if need be. We'll each bring a bottle of whiskey and see how it goes.

The lumber for the house we live on was cut on this mill before it was moved to the property. Dempsey built the house, raised a family in the house, the love of his life died in the house and so did he 3 years later. To much family history to sell off. But the pond in front of it is a great location and does need a shed at some point in time.

It'd be awesome of the wood for that shed was cut on that mill.

I built some things out of some black walnut my great granddad felled and milled in Robeson county around 1905.

Gotta love that heritage in this mill and the house you have there Russell.

Very cool. My Dad's cousin built a fishing cabin he owned out of the timber that was standing when he bought the land. Pretty little place on a great fishing lake. Me and some buddies used to use that place all the time in HS and college. He had an ancient wood stove with a cook top. We used to catch tons on panfish on Friday and do fish fry's all weekend. With cheap beer of course.

Tried running a sawmill off of an old John Deere, an M, iirc. One of the old two cylinder sideways, horizontal types. Changed to a pto setup off of the diesel . JD was just not smooth enough.
Built sawmill from two truckloads of parts dad brought home one day.

If it was an M, that's probably too small to run a saw mill of any size. An A or B would do better.

Yeah, might have been an A.. But the 574 International was great. PTO connected to see 10 X15 racing slick, spring loaded to the puppy on the landfill. Dad stuck the blade in a log, smoked the tire until we could disengage the PTO.

If the Oliver isn't seized up i might go that route

Wait, what? I might need to take a look at this old seized up tractor you speak of.

Very cool. But I want to see the Oli.

And you shut up. He lives too far away from you. (I have no idea where he lives, or you for that matter)

Of course you do, and "he'll give it to you to get it out of his way". HAAHAHAHHA. Antique tractor story of my life. :)
About 20 minutes. ;)
Everyone step back and breath for a second lol. Its not a complete tractor, its a portable oliver power unit. Imagine the front half of a tractor.....on a stand with a "pto" comming out of it.

Well. Hell. :)

We still want to see a photo of it.
It's an old man thing.
