For the first time in almost 13 years I am taking a bona fide vacation this summer. Looking for things to do in the morhead area.

Gonna have 5 children. In tow oldest is 9 youngest would be 4.

Also any decent day or half day fishing charters would be cool, along with good local fresh seafood places

Welp thanks a bunch

Congrats! I haven't taken a vacation in 11 years. This year might be the year.

Take the family across the bridge over to Atlantic Beach, take a left, and visit Fort Macon. The kids will get a charge out of it.

Drive past the state port at Morehead City over to Beaufort close by. Really neat old sea port town. Look at the boats on the waterfront, watch the wild horses in the shallows eating sea grass across that water on Carrot Island.

Been to fort Macon when I was younger. Always neat. Kinda concerned about kids walking off the ramparts, but a solid option for sure

NC Maritime museum at Beaufort for sure.....

Options: Ft Macon, head to Harkers Island, take the ferry to Cape Lookout for a half day thing. Or, From Beaufort take a ferry to Shackleford Banks and do some shelling ( uh, clams and such, not artillery :) Maritime museum in Beaufort, Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores. Theres a few mini golf joints at Indian Beach, Emerald Isle, Cape Carteret.

Been so long since I've been out there all my recommendations are out of date. Mystery charter boat is done, no more Juungle Land.

I'll parrot what others have said- Maritime museum is worth a stop. Fort Macon's neat, but younger kids might not appreciate it. There's lots of charter boats and cruises to take you around and show you the sights.

No Name Pizza in Morehead used to be a pretty good place to eat back in the 90's. I know it's still there, but I can't vouch for it currently.

There was a Piggly Wiggly where the 101 in Beaufort takes off to New Bern, great home cooking.

Rudy Duck Tavern is a great spot for some food. Across the bridge is Atlantic Beach, which is pretty nice

El's Drive in for good food. If they haven't started their remodel. If Ruddy Duck is busy we found the Ordinary around the corner to have really good food last time out there. For attractions @Alfred was spot on.

We always had good luck hand lining crabs under the state port/Radio Island bridge. Once you cross onto Radio Island there is a boat ramp on the left and you can walk down under the bridge.

All of the above. It's a great place from which to do many things. Ft. Macon, the aquarium, the Maritime Museum and Front Street in Beaufort, Swansboro, Hammock's Beach State Park, the lighthouse, Harker's Island.

@chrishf12 , Radio Island is also a great place to dive. Usually see a few sharks, and sand dollars the size of saucers.

Fort Macon, The museum, and the aquarium are all good, solid options and family friendly. Ft. Macon is perhaps the best preserved fort from its era in the US. Built during the war of 1812, I believe, but it saw little action. Also good sightseeing along the waterfront too.

@Chuckman
No diving license here, but we normally take the boat out and explore the sandbars. Can find some interesting things wash up. I agree the 6-7" sand dollars are not uncommon. We usually find them live so they don't get taken home.

We did hear this year that the coast guard may remove the channel markers out of the "S hook" to Lookout.

If you want to do a trip on a head boat I would go with the Carolina Princess over the Capt Stacy. Also bring fresh bait (jumping mullet from the local fish houses works great). The stuff you get on the head boats works but isn't the freshest.
