One guy was on a fishing charter boat, in flipflops, a fish hook went through his flipflop into his foot. He had a flesh eating bacteria, first they took off his foot, then at the knee, then his entire leg. He was in the hospital for probably 9 months in and out of the ICU.

Getting stuck by a spine on a fish can be deadly, but by the time you know you're in trouble it's too late to do anything about it.

 
Geez! How could he not feel those guys moving around?

I've heard of a few people that got really bad infections like Gowolfpack's link shows, but never crawlers lol. A friend's hand swelled up so bad they had to slice it open like a baked potato to prevent the skin from ripping further. He was in bad shape for a while, barely survived. Came from a prick of a blue crab when emptying a trap on the dock.

After reading that article, I'm ordering some Hibiclens. I keep hydrogen peroxide on the boat for cuts but stuff sounds better. It seems there isn't much you can do for punctures after the fact. Prevention seems to be the main tactic.
 
People don’t realize that most parasites that live in water or on aquatic animals can live in you.
 
I think it was The River of Doubt about Teddy Roosevelt that talked about the parasites in the Amazon that swim up your pee hole. Just another good reason why humans should not swim.

It's a fish, a parasitic catfish, the Candiru. Like Australia, everything that lives in the Amazon is designed to kill you.
 
I didn't watch the video, but I'll go ahead and assume I am to die of some horrible parasite from some combination of fish, hooks, flip flops, and not worrying about any of it. Put something about that on my headstone.
