As reported by National Review, the study — conducted by Environmental Progress (EP), which describes its goal as saving the environment by mid-century by removing obstacles to cheap, reliable and clean energy — found that solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of energy than nuclear power plants.

National Review quoted EP founder Michael Shellenberger, who said the growing number of solars panel is the main problem:

“We talk a lot about the dangers of nuclear waste, but that waste is carefully monitored, regulated, and disposed of, but we had no idea there would be so many panels — an enormous amount — that could cause this much ecological damage.”

EP is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the nuclear energy industry.

According to National Review, scavengers in developing countries such as India and China burn discarded solar panels, considered “e-waste,” to salvage copper wire for resale.

EP researchers say that “since the process requires burning off plastic, the resulting smoke contains toxic fumes that are carcinogenic and teratogenic (causing birth defects) when inhaled.”

And it's not just developing countries facing health risks from solar panels.

Both Japan and the U.S. are facing a growing problem with solar panel waste, according to National Review. While the amount of solar panel waste in Japan continues to skyrocket, there's a growing amount in America as many of its 1.4 million solar-energy installations are reaching the end of their 25-year lifespans.
