Looking for a budget AR in 5.56 and ran across one of these.

Any experience? Other suggestions? PSA freedom rifle?

Just a plinker...cause I don't have an AR

The Sport II is a great entry level budget rifle. I would get the one with the Magpul handguard vs the standard guard. It will cost you an additional $10.

I'd not get the Magpul handguard, or get it but replace it down the road with a BCM QRF drop in or another similar. Or go full baller with the $330 Centurion pocket quad rail.

I personally like the Magpul over the standard handguard but would replace both with better handguard. If @vp9c is willing to up the budget a little bit CDNN has a good deal on Smith & Wesson Tactical with a 5R barrel and quad rail for $699. That is a lot of rifle for under $700. IMHO

I like the Magpul one too, but the More slim one is much better to me.

For under $900 he could have s brand new LMT.

this is why I have a tough time pulling the trigger on an AR...

how is this tactical $200 better?

Yeah pushing the $$$ higher LOL. The LMT SPM16 5.56 16" is a solid rifle and a lot of value for the $$$ from a proven duty ready company.

For plinking its not. In theory the 1/8 5R rifling is better vs the 1/9 on the Sport II. For most people shooting most ammo it will not matter. The free floating rail is better because it does not affect the barrel when you start putting accessories on it like slings but you have to be a good enough shot for it to matter. You do not have a A2 front post sight so you have more flexibility when using red dot sights and other sights. Trigger, grip, stock etc... will all be the same.

Also it says its "tactical" so its got to better than "sport" right.... LOL

For me the best money you can spend on an AR15 is getting a decent trigger, a grip that fits your hands, good sights and a rail system that works for you. Those are the things that you really interface with. If the ergos of those things work for you it will make the gun a better shooter in your hands. No real one size fits all. IMHO.
