I picked up an old Westernfield/Mossberg 550/500 from another member a while back. Wood is very nicely done, but the receiver was trashed. I got tired of looking at it this afternoon, so….

That’s where we started…then got it roughed up…

And I had a bit of camouflage paint on hand from a previous effort. I should’ve gone tan or green, not particularly happy with the brown. But, it served the purpose of letting me ignore work for an hour.

And….here we are.

Looks pretty good, I've used high temp engine enamel on a few, but never shot them enough to know if it worked or not.

Nice work sir.

That looks good to me.

Can one even get Kal-Gard Gun Kote any more? Decades before I ever heard of Cerakote, I finished some motorcycle wheel hubs with Kal-Gard. You sprayed it on from a rattle can and then baked it in the oven; it produced a dark satin greenish-gray finish not unlike a nice Parkerizing job, without filling in fine detail or tolerances, and it was tough as nails. It was simple to use, and still looked like the day it was applied when I finally sold the bike on.

I use engine paint on my stainless mini 14, then hit the dried paint with a heat gun and then in the oven at 200 to harden it. The paint doesn't like bore cleaner though. It usually lasts 5 years before I have to do it again.
