Decided it was time to introduce the Grandkids to the shooting world and it went well.. I held off for the past 5 years because their Mother was murdered and didn't want them disturbed by handling something that can take someone life but I thought it was time and they were interested in what I do..So, I started a fire arm class here at the house, showing them fire arms and told them that they can and will take someone's life if used incorrectly. The 15 year old girl was receptive, but the 11 year old boy sort of bolted out of the garage after putting the pistol down. So, I took the 15 year old girl out to the range and she did really well. She had fun with the Ruger Pistol with a reflex sight and the 15-22..She talked her 11 year old brother into joining us the next weekend and he did well also.. Whats funny is that, these two kids normally hate each other and bicker all the time.. But at the range, they shared weapons, took turns and helped each other.. They never get along this good at the house ? I'm liking this new attitude and all this week they keep looking at the vids they took of each other and talking about it..This weekend Im going to introduce their 10 year old brother to shooting at their insistence and I cant tell whos more excited, them or the lil brother.. Maybe there is some merit into the saying " A family that shoots together stays together" Don't know, but I can tell you. They now have a common interest and there is no fighting in the house. Downside, these kids can burn thru some 22 LR ammo..

Good for you, @Lager . You are making memories that will last these kids the rest of their lives.

Thanks for everyone's responses and condolences.. Its been a difficult time and continues to be so.. Ive had the kids since they were born because they were the offspring from a Mother that wouldn't listen to me about the company she associated with and paid the ultimate price and a dead beat Dad..I WISH I could be Grandfather, but Im not,, at the age of 62 years old? Im still playing a Dad and I'm old and tired.. LOL.. But, it seems like Ive found something the kids all like doing together so I'm going with it.. Bought them all dirt bikes and 4 wheelers,, that didn't last long.. Bought them a boat, they lost interest quickly.. They might lose interest in this also so Im trying to keep this interesting,, who likes to shoot at paper ?? That's why I'm using reactive targets, they have to make noise or move around when hit.. This also reinforces the danger of a weapon and the responsibility you have when its in your hands..Like member MacEntyre mentioned earlier about following the rules and I agree completely..

Range at your place? Or somewhere else?

If you’re in Salisbury, we should take them to PHA to shoot at all the steel with a suppressed 22 bolt gun. My 12yo eats that up!!

BigW,, I'm a member of the Riverside Gun Club here in Salisbury and have competed at the PHA range.. What a cool place !! Ive competed there in the 2 gun tactical and the speed steel they used to have there but it seems like they quit doing that ?? Im all for meeting up with you at PHA on any Sunday of even on Saturday ( but I have to work on everyone one of those) to have the kids all shoot together.. That could be fun to watch and Ive found that kids seem to learn more or quicker from other kids then adults.. I'm betting your 12 year old could eat up the targets with my 15-22 with the green dot on it too... Just let me know... Send me a PM if your willing..

I had my son’s identical twin boys living with me from the day they came home from the hospital until 21 months later when I took his wife and the little rug rats to Fort Sill, OK. It was loud and wild in the house. I loved it. It is silent now with all four children grown and living in other cities. And now the grandkids in Lawton, OK. Man it was great coming home everyday with two kids stretching their arms up to be held.

What you are doing for those kids by raising them is hard work. It’s put many things you looked forward to on the back burner. But I can say this- guys like you are my hero. Not only are you giving love and security to the children but planting a seed so those kids become productive citizens and future parents. I applaud you @Lager.

Thanks BlackGun,, that meant a lot to me.. I gotta tell you tho,, Its hard man.. Both the Wife and I don't have the time ( due to management positions in automobile dealerships) to become the Soccer /baseball/football Mom and Dads that we used to be 40 years ago. Every day, I feel like we are failing parent class. But, they are happy and well fed. Well schooled and live a country life style where we have a garden, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats to care for. But, Im teaching them everything they need to take care of them selves in the future from cooking, laundry , the golden rule, shooting and fishing..There is additional problem that I have to deal and live with is the fact the kids are biracial,, they are treated differently especially in school. Not so much with the younger boys, but the 15 year old girl has experienced racial problems because she not really black and shes not really white.. As much as we might think the public or the world has become color blind, its not the case. Mostly from her peers at school. Try and explain that situation when she comes home from school in tears..

lager, that is surely some challenging circumstances, hang in there . If there is anything you ever need, I would gladly do whatever I can to help you and the kids..
you are more man than most, I believe you are doing them great service to train them to be self reliant....two thumbs up to you. peace and prayers for your and their journey...

Yes I get the biracial school kid issue with the girl. Especially difficult with black peers. They want to to pick a side- “are you black or white. Can’t be both.” All my kids have and had friends from all cultures. All their friends spent lots of time at my home. Teenage girls are evil to each other. Their is girl drama everywhere they go. My girls were all white and game home in tears quite a number of times. Stay strong sir. It’s a tough position you are in but I think you and the wife will rise above the challenges. The kids will never forget what you have done for them. They might not always acknowledge it in words but when adulthood comes it will be evident.
