This sub forum seemed lonely...so let's post up pics of our traditional black powder toys...

My "chunk" gun:

Monstrously awesome! From what I recall, you aren't what folks would call a "short" fella either. That puts some perspective on the size of that thing.

I go about 6'4"...I need a stool to load that thing.

Tim, ever shoot at Alvin York Shoot?

Yes sir! That rifle was built around a barrel I won at the York shoot a few years back. The old feller in the pic is my dad and the rifle's creator.

Small world I'm pretty sure I've seen your dad at Friendship & The York Shoot. I bet you know Mel Hankla too.

Here is my 1824, passed from my great uncle to my dad to me. Unfortunately it was converted to cap in the 1840s, but I suppose if I had to trust my life to it back then I would have wanted the same.

The shooter is a lyman great planes 50 cal flint. Nothing special, but I enjoy it. Would really like to find someone who could modify the stock to make it squared off like the 1824 rifle. That curved stock may be period correct but it's hell on your shoulder with that point digging in to your chest if you try to fire it like a modern rifle.

I believe that's a small artillery piece with a stock on it!

Ka THOOOOM

My latest acquisition... sold off a minty Pedersoli and a couple other things to fund it. (I've learned that "more muzzleloaders" is not better than "quality muzzleloaders")

Colerain swamped barrel, .40 caliber, L&R lock. Very light and handy rifle. Made by Mike Davis, finished by Daniel Jackson.

I think that may be a Model 1822, if it was made in 1824. Basically a Model 1816 with some improvements. Is it rifled or still smoothbore?

The Lyman GPRs are great rifles (for the money). They shoot on par with rifles two or three times the price.

Seems to be smoothbore from what I can tell, and it's over 50 cal. Dad seems to recall that it was 'bored out to use shot for hunting' at some point in it's history.

Where might one get a decent reproduction Brown Bess or Charleville? Looking for a functional musket that will be fired.

SPM, your best bet is to keep an eye on Gunbroker, or visit a variety of muzzleloading forums as they do pop up now and then. Used examples do show up, or you can opt for a new production musket, Pedersoli being common. There are muskets being made in India that are decent, and despite rumors of poor quality, this has not been corroborated by fact. Still, I'd probably opt for a Pedersoli. Dixie Gun Works, Cabela's and various other online shops have them.

The Pedersoli Brown Bess and Charleville muskets have a very good reputation. Also, some of the Miroku (Japan) made rifles are very well-made.

I have an early Pedersoli Brown Bess, and it's well-made and a LOT of fun to shoot. I'll post photos in a separate thread.

Got a CVA .50 cal Bobcat. Painted the black synthetic stock brown and cast my own Mini Balls.

For pistols have couple .36 cals I also cast .375 round balls for. Also use them as 0000 buck in 12 ga loads.
Both are Italian copies, 1851 Navy and 1862 Pocket Police
