I've had a game camera we use for security / surveillance for about 3 years. It's a Browning Dark Ops BTC-6HD 10MP I got at Cabelas in the bargain cave. Been pretty happy with it. A 64GB memory card will hold a weeks worth of 15 second videos or several weeks of pictures. I usually check the pics once a week.

I would like to have something with more resolution. I would like to clearly be able to read the tag on a car in the street. I always have the camera set to it's highest resolution. For reference, in the pics below, the center of the gate is 55 feet from the camera. Magnifying the pic doesn't make the tag any more clear.

Do I buy the max megapixels I can afford or is there more to it than that? Or do I need a security specific camera? Just looking for some guidance here.

That's asking a lot for a trail camera..... clear pics of license plates on moving vehicles 75ft away are prob not gonna be doable with a trail cam. You could bury a post closer to the gate/road and get better pics.

You will have to get closer with the trail cam as BBD stated.

I’ve been wanting to add a security camera out by the street just for having a record of cars and plates as they go by. I would add it to my existing POE IP cameras. Have seen several online where people hide them in a bird house. Might be an option for mounting on the corner of your fence by the road.

This is interesting.

If you're using POE IP cameras (and here's where I show my ignorance), then I assume they are wired. If this is the case, would your street cam also be wired, and how would you handle that?

I have one more available port on my NVR, and I like this idea.

Yep, one of my next projects is putting a couple pvc conduits in the ground out to a natural area in the front yard. My irrigation for the front yard is out there and hasn’t worked for years because the cables were cut and repaired that control the solenoids. I plan to run new wire for irrigation, a couple cat6 cables and some extra wire for landscape lighting possibly. I figure while I rent a trencher, I might as well run some extra conduit just in case. PVC conduit is cheap.

"Just looking for some guidance here."
one is none and two is one....that's my guidance.
whatever camera you get, it won't "get" everything.
that's why i use 3 at every location.
after using 6 different kinds,
i have decided on this:

1. Primos Proof 3. did 1 and 2 and 3 is much better.
2. an old Moultrie. not the newest ones since they run out the batteries too fast.
3. go NOglow, not LOWglow. really, really drill down into the specifications.
