Got a trapdoor coming in this week. Looking for any information on reloading 405 grn lead bullets. I know that there is a section in the different manuals but was wondering what SMOKELESS powder you are using.

Plenty of loading data for smokeless on the net but first and foremost the warning that a trapdoor was designed for black powder pressures and any of the smokeless loads that will be listed can easily be double/triple charged. One double charge is all it takes to destroy a trapdoor so caution is the rule. Wise reloaders throw one charge, verify the charge is in the case, immediately place a bullet and seat that bullet before advancing to another case. That means no progressive loaders, only single stage and no distractions. It only takes one time to make bomb so have all your antennas up and running before you start loading for one of the most enjoyable rifles there is to shoot.

Almost forgot, I use Accurate 5744, the powder that has destroyed more black powder guns that any other in recent times. Used wisely it is the most accurate smokeless powder currently available for distances past one hundred yards in a trapdoor.

Got the gun in today and everything looks good. Will be taking to the smith on Wednesday to have him give his stamp of approval. I did reload 16 rounds. 8 - 37.0 grns of RL-7 and Lyman says it is 1534 feet sec and 16,400 PSI. The other 8 were loaded with 42.0 grns of Varget and that show 1258 feet sec at 11,100 psi. Those loads are the starting loads in the Lyman manual. Need to see what other powder I have I can use.

Here are some bore shots about every 4 to 5 inches

Just got back from the smiths. He scoped the bore and said it looks "great" then fired a couple of rounds. Came back with a smile on his face and said nice rife. Go out and shoot it.

I shoot quite a bit of Trail Boss in my 45/70 rifles, but they are a bit stronger than a trap door.

Collar button mold from NOE and a few grains of red dot make for an entertaining time.

I will have to check but I seem to remember 10gr unique loads were a good go to load.

The fellas over at castboolits.com can help you out with loads.
