Since I don’t have time to sit and call coyotes at the moment I thought I might try a trap. They are on camera coming down a lane from clearing to clearing fairly regularly so this might be a good spot for a spring trap of some kind

Any brand recommendations and size? How about bait/lure?

I have zero experience with trapping but the Yotes are getting bad

Thanks

Definitely check state laws on allowed traps/baits etc. Don't let/make them suffer...I dislike them just as much but no need or reason to make them suffer in a trap.
You check them every morning.
A lot of times the are just lying there or asleep.
They don’t suffer (other than they don’t like having to stay in one place), the trap is a set of cuffs, they just are held there until you show up.

No need to fret.

I was referring to the bacon grease in burlap hung from trees with shark hooks kind of ideas.

Got a camera on the area I can check the feed live & it notifies me of motion.

@Tailhunter

Got an MB550 and some lure in my cart

What’s the best way to secure that small chain so that the coyote doesn’t pull it up? I could do it somewhat close to a tree and put a gutter nail into the trunk but i saw some rebar stakes with washers welded on the top to secure the chain. Could I take a piece of rebar and just bend a loop on the top and get the same result?

Coyotes are bad for popping rebar.
What I use is a pogo.

I make them 18” long with 2” fender washer at one end and a quick link on the other.
It takes a tool to drive them in the ground, I made it with a hardened bolt and a longer section of smooth bar.

They make stakes you can drive with a hammer. Add another swivel between it and the chain. Use heavy duty stuff, coyotes are strong. I even weld my j hooks closed.

As far as bait goes, most local butcher shops take their entrails/spare parts to the dump. I know there is a decent guy in Wilkesboro (Meat Sweats) that lets people take his 'leftovers' for predator bait as long as they bring back his barrel. I am sure he's not the only one, as you are saving them a trip to the dump. Just a thought as far as the bait goes.

OR, if you have chickens that are misbehaving they are really enticing bait too.

A great accessory to your mb550 traps would be an MB anchor chain

Some use the "Fang" style cables. With either product you drive them deep in the ground with a metal driver and they pull sideways anchoring as you pull them. The disadvantage is that they can be hard to pull out. This is easily dealt with though, most trappers use a puller or the same small auger on a cordless drill to make their sets (to mimic a small rodent hole or buried food) so if you have one of these in your bag when you want to pull your trap, just drill down next to where you have it set and you can pull them up with ease. Also, if you do get a coyote in a trap a wise trapper just remakes the set (lots of good reasons for this) and may catch multiples before having to pull the traps.

Good luck! I'll be setting 8 traps this week on a ridge next to my farm I just got permission to trap. I hear them every night all around and I have too many animals (dairy goats, piglets, and birds of all kinds). I'm also trying to balance the yotes out for the deer, turkey and grouse population in my surrounding area. Trapping is effective for sure if you know what you are doing (i'm learning) but calling them in and going to work with a rifle or shotgun is also effective.

I used to use mb450 coyotes are very smart and everything has to be scent free along with all your traps. Try flat sets or dirt hole set use skunk essence to lure them in the will travel the easiest route most the time so logging road or a old road that meets a field this time of year set 2 traps 10 to 15 ft apart could possibly catch 2 sense their paring up for breeding if you catch a female reset the trap and you will probably get the make the next night. I went to hunting with thermal now so I don’t trap as much as I used to

Also make sure u double anchor your traps or they will pull them up.
