My wife is traveling to these two states. She has a conference in NJ and heading to NY (not the city) to visit family. She's driving up so no need to worry about airport security either way. I started looking at getting the taser pulse https://buy.taser.com/products/taser-pulse but NY says its illegal to carry. The bulk of the time is spent in NJ so I'm wondering what legal options we have.

I know FOPA will allow us to have a guntlocked in the vehicle but I've read NY officers do not recognize FOPA. They let the court sort it out.

I'm wondering if FOPA would apply to the taser? If so, she could carry it while in NJ and then lock it up in the trunk when traveling to NY.

Don't. There's nothing there worth the risk.
The conference is a must attend and so is visiting her mom and brother. Wish this wasn't the case but if I have to put a baseball bat in the car I will. I've mapped it out where she doesn't have to get gas while in either state.

They'll bust you for a baseball bat in NJ, happened to a law abiding friend of my ex's.

I am pretty sure a machete is a no-no up there. You don't have many choices. I'd pack a few small, legal pocket knives. Flashlights. The bat is fine, just throw a couple gloves and a ball in for a background story. Maybe have an extra tire iron in the car. Something with a little extra reach. If you want to spend actual money, then maybe order a survival cane that can do damage and hides a blade. If you stay away from bad areas you will likely have no issues. A plan and a good head on your shoulders should suffice.

Gee with all the above comments you'd think the snowflakes invaded CFF. Bunch of brave souls here huh? :p

I hate ground hornets so much I even carry a can of bug killer even when I travel.

Those cans of wasp and hornet spray that shoot a stream 30 feet should work quite well at a reasonable distance. About the only thing they can get you for is using a pesticide in a way not specified on the label.

There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity...

I would go with this. It's about the only thing I think they can't arrest you for. When I go up to N.J. to see my son I leave all guns home locked up and I check my car for any ammo I may have left in it. It's just not worth the risk.

2/0, 4/0 and other electric cable sample sizes (1’-6” sample) in the car since your wife is a sales representative for Alabama Wire, inc. out of Pelham, AL

This^^^^^^

No need to go north, unless we're an invading militia.

Sherman had an army when he came South. If you have an army with you, you can damn well do what you want.

Solo, not so much. You are at they mercy of others.

No different than staying out of the section 8 neighbourhoods or avoiding the meth shacks. Brave and foolhardy are only the same thing to children.

Also, make sure you have NO HOLLOW POINT AMMO in your car. A single round can land you jail time.

Straight from NJ gun lawyer's website...

Hollow Nose or Hollow Point Bullets

In New Jersey, it is also illegal to possess hollow nose or hollow point bullets unless you are engaged in one of the activities that are considered “exemptions.” These include: hunting, fishing, and target shooting. You may also possess hollow nose or hollow point bullets on your personal property or while traveling to or from a point of purchase. Possession of hollow nose or hollow point bullets is considered a fourth degree crime, punishable by a sentence to serve up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.

It is actually quite a bit different. As much as things suck up there most areas are very safe. Stay out of the bad places and you are fine. The odds of needing your EDC are very low.

Maybe those skinny jeans wearing Antifa folks are tough enough to take over. Can't believe the fear on here. The OP's wife has to go North. He wants to take a few precautions. No big deal. But surely people shouldn't be pooping their pants like little girls if they have to go to NY or NJ for a few days.

I am going to test you guys. Ready?

BOO!

You all ok? :p

A Bid pen or two without the cover cap are a great thing to have.

Better than a spike, and it is just a pen.

A foot long, or better, screwdriver under the seat is just used to remove hub caps in case of a flat tire.

When I travel I have a extra pre payed cell phone as a back up.

I moved back from NJ earlier this year. No tasers in NJ. Also very strict on knives.

I knew some girls that carried some of those self defense kitty key chains. Kind of like this one but less cute.

Best thing to do is absolutely avoid bad areas at any cost. Avoid bad situations at any cost. Cops are literally everywhere around the the touristy areas of the city. I would say that's a plus, but they do very much employ an arrest first and let the judge figure it out mentality.

I never had any issues up there outside the lack of freedom. Fun place to visit. Food is off the charts everywhere so don't eat at any chains.

I’m heading that way soon myself. As far as I can tell NYC won’t allow a folding pocket knife but does allow fixed blade knives under 4” for purposes other than cutting humans. I’m heading to a wedding and there will be cake.

Bring some back for me.

You guys are way too wound up, relax, it isn’t like she’s going to Jalalabad in a bikini. You all know that your most important weapon is between your ears. The conference will be in an acceptable location, and so will family, so the only real unmanaged risk is during travel. Carry a spare $100 in the car in case the wallet gets lost, make sure that the spare tire is in good shape, a flashlight, a flare, some long handled tools etc in the back of the car in case of an accident. It’ll all be fine.

Most convention centres are in a downtown or downtown adjacent region. Where, you know, bums and other troublesome scum tend to congregate.

But please, go on insulting everyone who chooses to avoid states with oppressive policing, a tolerance for crime and purely political law enforcement if it makes you feel like Billy Badass.

Avoidance is fine. I am certainly not Billy Badass, but there is no reason to fear a little travel. I don't recall ever posting about what a tough guy I am, or how I'll single handedly destroy my enemies. Although people on this forum do that all the time. Unless of course they have to travel to a scarey place. Then everybody becomes chicken little. I am truly baffled. NY and NJ are not Fallujah. I certainly don't want to live up there, but telling the OP not to go is over the top sillyness. But I guess the doomsayers are correct. Our best days are behind us and the end is near if we're afraid of the big bad Yankess states.

That escalated quickly. There is no avoiding either state. She spent 25 years in NY so it's not the state that bothers me. It's the fact she's traveling alone and staying a few days without her handgun. She's more than capable of taking care of herself but having additional safety would be nice.

It's the same concern that will make me check all the vehicle fluids and make sure it's gas'd up. Speaking of which I need new windshield wipers.

What about something along the lines of a Kimber LifeAct or whatever they call them now?
Main reason I bought one for Mrs Oneofsix was it has no CO2 cartridge to expire/leak down- primer fired IIRC.

If I were you I'd worry more about losing more animals to yotes while she's gone. She might return and open up a can of whoop-ass on your behind.

Former NY resident here.

Do NOT bring a handgun into the STATE of NY for any reason unless you have a NY CCP.
Open carry does not exist in NY, There is only concealed carry and only residents of NY can get concealed carry permits. The NYSP do not give a shit about the FOPA or any other federal law that says "you" may carry in NY. Their policy is to arrest and let the court sort it out. This includes active duty military, and retired police.

No.

This stuff works great on wasps, but not at all on humans. Don't waste your time with this stuff.

Better to spend your time and money on something that actually works on humans.
