Travel to NY & NJ. What options do I have?

This is not legal information just what I have gotten away with when I had to head north a few years back ...

I wanted something in my truck but was advised like above ... no bats or quite a few other things are questioned. A friend called someone who was a little more in the know and found out a couple things kinda give you a semi-acceptable reason to have them in your vehicle with my choice being “I lost my lug wrench and have breaker bar in the cab since I just had my tires balanced and rotated before my trip and made sure the lugs were tightened down correctly ”. With that I carry a cheaper 24” 1/2” drive breaker bar with the appropriate socket for my wheel lugs. I was never questioned so I don’t know if that “reason” for having it would fly but I did have the spiel ready if DC or MD LEOs stopped me and asked.

Something like this has a decent reason to be in your vehicle if you sell it right ...
https://smile.amazon.com/Capri-Tool...id=1535937189&sr=1-4&keywords=breaker+bar+24”
... but this is NOT legally based just opinions.

Drill a hole in the base of the handle to add a really thick strip of good leather in a loop so it will remain secure in your hand during any potential encounters with any stubborn nuts, bolts, etc.....lol

:D

This is why I stayed here after college and my parents soon followed. ny/nj is the worst.... Pocket knife is about the best you can do. Maybe some pepper spray, but a small bottle, no bear spray size. They may be sympathetic towards a taser but not a stun gun. Stay out of the cities if possible.
Good luck and God bless.

My wife is traveling to these two states. She has a conference in NJ and heading to NY (not the city) to visit family. She's driving up so no need to worry about airport security either way. I started looking at getting the taser pulse https://buy.taser.com/products/taser-pulse but NY says its illegal to carry. The bulk of the time is spent in NJ so I'm wondering what legal options we have.

I know FOPA will allow us to have a guntlocked in the vehicle but I've read NY officers do not recognize FOPA. They let the court sort it out.

I'm wondering if FOPA would apply to the taser? If so, she could carry it while in NJ and then lock it up in the trunk when traveling to NY.
Nope. Only if you are passing through to a destination where the firearms are legal. Even then, if you got pulled over in NJ or NY, you would still spend several days in jail for illegal firearms because neither state allows FOPA as a defense until you get to court to face the illegal firearms charges. They don't care about your rights or federal law.

This^^^^^^

No need to go north, unless we're an invading militia.

Eh, even then its a bad idea. I think we know what happened the last time some southerners invaded the North..

I'm with @CZfool68 , big cities up north arent that terrible. In the past two years Ive done DC, Philly, and Boston...ZERO ISSUES.
Downtown, in the residential areas, all over. Sure, there are rough areas, but it's easy to avoid those.
And while the convention centers will be downtown, usually, and there will likely be some vagrants around, it's no reason to get panties in a knot.
"got some change"
"nope" and keep walking
or just keep walking.
THAT. EASY.

Be smart about where you are, and who is near you, she'll be fine.
Some of you others...well, you might not fare as well lol

No.

This stuff works great on wasps, but not at all on humans. Don't waste your time with this stuff.

Better to spend your time and money on something that actually works on humans.

Most of the ones I have used were eye irritants. I have never had to use a can on a human and would not expect a human to drop dead like a hornet, but a good shot to the eyes would probably be a major distraction to an attacker. I am always open to suggestions from people who have more experience than I do, and if you know for sure that a person could take a face full of the stuff with no ill effects, then I will have to search for something else.

and this is why we need national reciprocity
The current governor has already stated that it would not be respected at the state level and he and the state AG where willing to go all the way to SCOTUS with it. However this was before Trumps SCOTUS picks.

Former NY resident here.

Do NOT bring a handgun into the STATE of NY for any reason unless you have a NY CCP.
Open carry does not exist in NY, There is only concealed carry and only residents of NY can get concealed carry permits. The NYSP do not give a shit about the FOPA or any other federal law that says "you" may carry in NY. Their policy is to arrest and let the court sort it out. This includes active duty military, and retired police.
NY is a police state unto itself.

And then he can pay in the next election It would be HIS "bathroom" law

Didn't he even imply that he was going to give a standing Shoot To Kill order for the NYSP if they encounter any out of state person carrying a firearm? No way any NY DA is going to prosecute a NY trooper that murders an out of stater that is compliance with all federal law.

Avoidance is fine. I am certainly not Billy Badass, but there is no reason to fear a little travel. I don't recall ever posting about what a tough guy I am, or how I'll single handedly destroy my enemies. Although people on this forum do that all the time. Unless of course they have to travel to a scarey place. Then everybody becomes chicken little. I am truly baffled. NY and NJ are not Fallujah. I certainly don't want to live up there, but telling the OP not to go is over the top sillyness. But I guess the doomsayers are correct. Our best days are behind us and the end is near if we're afraid of the big bad Yankess states.

I spent a bunch of time in NJ when I was commuting to the US to court my ex, and quite a few places we ended up in are why I pursued my carry permit as soon as I was able. And no they aren't Fallujah, the weather would be nicer in Fallujah.

When I lived in NJ the joke was if the boss sent you to Camden you were fired. Stay out of Jersey City area, Trenton and Camden and it wasn't unsafe. It is not like it is a mystery which areas to avoid. Maybe avoid Atlantic City too. But when we were there Atlantic City was fine as long as you didn't pull an all nighter. We would do day trips and get out before dark.

Asbury Park was an eye opener. Especially at 2am on the shore road. There's a half built hotel we were near, I forget the name. That was an interesting night.

You guys are way too wound up, relax, it isn’t like she’s going to Jalalabad in a bikini. You all know that your most important weapon is between your ears. The conference will be in an acceptable location, and so will family, so the only real unmanaged risk is during travel. Carry a spare $100 in the car in case the wallet gets lost, make sure that the spare tire is in good shape, a flashlight, a flare, some long handled tools etc in the back of the car in case of an accident. It’ll all be fine.

Jim,

Stop being so damn reasonable.

I’m planning a trip up the NC coast into VA and up the big bridge that goes through Delaware and Maryland. When I found out it went though those two states, I decided to go up the bridge and either take the ferry across the bay back into VA or just turn around and come back. I’m NOT leaving my gun at home and I’m NOT taking it into those communist state either! God forbid going into NY/NJ!!!!

Let me play devil's advocate. Would you go up there to visit your daughter or Grandkids? 1 week with just your wits and weapons legal up there?

Silly boy you got so much to live for
So much to aim for, so much to try for
You blow it all with, paranoia
You're so insecure you, self-destroyer
