Truly frightening movies

I don't know that I would consider Event Horizon "truly frightening" in the way that I meant, that being something that could be real. But it is definitely a deeply disturbing movie.

I thought we were just avoiding the jump scare cheap thrills movies. Event horizon is definitely more classical horror, but did really great job with the psychologic and sciFi elements. Any movie that takes place out in the vacuum of space, light years away, much less in 'hell' makes the list for me :).

If anyone has a daughter, I just watched "Light of my Life' (amazon prime), and that jacked me up a bit. The lead character is a liberal p***y, but the movie explores a part of Daddy's everywhere in this particular SHTF setting. Unlike the main character, I would be....inoculating...every single person I came into contact with that I didn't trust. I honestly don't see any other long term strategy. this movie might actually make an interesting thread if anyone else seen it, happy to discuss more of my thoughts.

Gattaca comes to mind now I think on it. A whole police force just to make sure the Invalid don't try and leave their station.

Yes, it was just avoiding jump-scares. I guess that it's a matter of definition when I say "truly frightening", thus my response. But Event Horizon is definitely at the top of my list on sheer creep-out horror. That's a genre that's way too overlooked by the producers today - takes too much work on actually telling a story, I suppose.

Gattaca was a film made post "Logan's Run" with slightly different yet similar theme. Being a new Mom when Logan's Run was released, it made quite an impression on me.

Oh yeah that was a slightly goofy presentation of a chilling premise. And also Jenny Agutter which is never a bad thing.
