Wife found this guy trying to cross the road. I don't know enough about them to tell her anything except "don't pick it up" but she picked it up anyhow. All 10 fingers are still attached, so that's good, but i'm a turtle noob - if it's not a box turtle it's a snapper to me.

What kind is it and is it safe to pick up?

Can’t see the marking but I’m gonna guess yellow bellied slider

Actually it's a snapping turtle that was confused about it's gender assignment on the morning you found it so it became another species until it can get spiritual assistance and determine what it really wants to be.... Check back later...

Hmmm looks like finger grooves on the top of that shell ... gotta be a Glock.

Seriously though I’m with Catfish ... yellow bellied slider ... any black dots on the belly around the edge? Some people do keep them as pets but I’d rather see them crawling in the back 40 and living. They will snap and lock on

I would go with yellow bellied. Your average pond turtle. I kept them as pets and thousands were sold into slavery at one time to die a miserable death. They calm down quickly in captivity. If you ever decide to keep one never feed them bologna. It closely resembles the color of fingers. Just trust me on that one. :D

That's what I call a "leave it alone turtle". Observe it, Admire it, and then move along. Take pictures if you want, but leave the turtle alone.
If you don't mess with it you can't catch anything from it, and it can't catch anything from you. They live in their own slow world. We should let them.

Alex: For 1000 likes, can anyone explain the response above?

I know, and so does Flashpoint, who else?

Thank you. I was hoping someone would get it so I wouldn't have to pretend I was off my meds, lol.

We should start a CFF Turtle chapter. Unless there already is one.

If it is in the road we should actually move it, to the side it is presumably going to (the direction it's pointed).
