started two new knives today, both forged 1084 from aldo. stay tuned for upcoming pics. these were forged from thinner stock than I usually forge but turned out well for what they were. he was out of my usual 1/4x 1-1/2 stock. one is what I call the shark,a drop point other one is a trailing point. I am currently shaping handles for it. the shark handle materials should be ready to cut tomorrow.

I've always wanted to forge a knife. Wish I had your talents! I'd like to see some pictures too, not just the finished product but the entire way thru the process.

well, here are the 3 together for the lat time, dr. get his tomorrow. the shark isn't finished yet and I still have to buff the handles out on the similar one to the dr.'s knife. the center has a sort of halo in the steel which is quite rare for 1084. it is in all essence a hamon. I started to trash it but it still is fully functional and their is almost half the blade before you hit soft steel.002.JPG

I can make any pattern or type, price depends on material of handle and type of steel. I can and have done a searles bowie one scale 9 1/2 cutting edge the other slightly over 14"

I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford a handmade bowie lol I'll look into what I'd want thanks

I made one of these to replace one I traded off for a redfield revo scope didn't really want to but I had to make another like it. right now I have two more in line to do then if nothing else comes in I am caught up for a while. gonna be stuck at home till the cast comes off the wifes leg sometime in February. I am forging on the front porch right now and doing grinding work and finish work in the house in between help times. it takes me around 15 minutes to do a bevel on around a 5 inch knife. the forge time varies as to what steel I use. I have access to an evenheat so I can do stainless but I hate it, to me a real knife is carbon steel. I admit to carrying one of several zero tolerance pocket knives and I have several Damascus knives I have done along with a couple of folders but for weight and carry I chose zt over any other out there. every zt I own is powdered steel and it is a little different and tougher than most stainless. I am looking for a pic of the searles in my folder now if I find it I will put it up here. the drop point bowie you know as a bowie was out much later than the sandbar fight. somewhere on the net is a copy of a letter jim bowies mother wrote to an editor in Louisiana describing the knife jim carried which was a present from his brother and what it describes is a 9 1/4 blade straight on top around 1/4 thick and 1-1/4 wide. this would be a searles as the description fits. his brother was known to frequent searles for cutlery. the witnesses described the knife used as the largest butchers knife they had ever seen another plug for the searles. we will never know what was used but that is my guess and they are none the less a beautiful knife.
