Question for 308 people. What kind of ammo and grain do you use for target and hunting deer? I’m trying to see what’s best for both.

I load 150 grain Hornady soft points in front of IMR 4895 for about all my 308 shooting in a half dozen rifles.

All depends on the rifle. I have two 308s. Both the AR10 and Remington 700 like Hornady 165gr SST.

Also, I don’t reload.

168 Matchking is the go to standard for target shooting in the .308.

the 175gr makes it a little easier at 800+. We did 1100 with 168s but everything was just absolutely perfect for that to work when it did. If I was starting over, I would just go right to 175gr for everything, just in case.

I was referring to high power rifle matches out to 600 with an M1A.
Heavier bullets are frowned upon in M1A as there are rumored to cause long term damage to op rods.

Every rifle is different. What works in mine may not work in yours, even if they came off the assembly line right after each other.

Any major manufactures loads are going to be good to 3-500yards as long as your rifle likes them.

I recommend trying several until you find what your rifle likes. Start with cheapest quality major manufacture loads and work your way up to different premium loads. Start with something like one of the winchester deer season xps or power points. That is several loads to try right there. If you are lucky one of those will shoot in your rifle well and cost less! Then move up to more expensive ammo. Case in point, my mauser 660 in 243win, was shooting federal premium ballistic tips really well. I was running low and could not find them. Noticed Winchester deer season xp was loading a ballistic tip of same weight so, I bought some. My rifle could not tell the difference out to 300 yards. Score!!! Cheaper ammo my rifle liked!!

Another trick that worked well before the ammo shortages was to take cash to the range and try to buy 5 rounds off of anybody shooting the same caliber as long as they were not reloads.

If you know anyone else with same caliber try to split cost of what y'all want to try.

It is all trial and error until you find what your rifle likes. Sorry, it cost a lot but, finding what your riffle likes is a journey.

I hunt with 165 and target shoot with 175. Different rifles though. Like everyone else said, find what you gun likes and shoot that.
