I was going to post this last night, but apparently I was more tired than I realized and ended up falling asleep before I did. I will try to pick up where I left off.

Saturday night into Sunday morning, the fever never got below the threshold, so they had to come check it every hour throughout the night. They would give him an hour and half at times, but for the most part we saw them every hour through the night. When the doctors came by yesterday morning, we were informed that they still did not know the cause of infection. They did blood cultures Friday, Saturday, and yesterday. The blood cultures were not growing anything, the chest x-ray was clean, and the CT scan did not show anything abnormal. His headache has gotten worse, but they don’t know why he has a headache. He didn’t get out of the bed yesterday except to go to the bathroom a couple of times. He still didn’t have an appetite. He finally managed to drink one of the Ensure protein drinks just to get something in him. On the positive side, they were able to keep his fever down long enough to run the blood transfusion.

We were on the 7th floor and they moved us down to the 6th floor last night. He had asked to move, so we were happy they were able to honor that request. He was on the 6th floor the first hospital stay, so he is more comfortable down here with the nurses and doctors he is used to. Last night the fever spiked to 102.6 when the CNA did final rounds around 11pm. They gave him more Tylenol and I assume they got it down because I don’t recall being woken every hour. This morning it went back up to 101. The doctor told us yesterday that they give an antibiotic 72 hours before they decide if it is working or not. Since he is still having fevers, I would expect them to consider changing his antibiotic today. They should be making rounds within the hour, so we will find out more when they come by.

Hang in there, and if you need anything don’t be shy about reaching out. As treatment stretches out people often feel that they’ve become a burden on friends and family and so tough it out when they most need to be asking for help. In the meantime, we’ll continue to pray.
