It doesn't make it thicker, but I ain't payin $80 for a dayum sight sleeve in brass. But, it helps ya put the top 1/3 of the sight over the groove in the top strap like yer sposed to with 45 Colt (about 1/2 sight over the top strap with 38/357 or other smallish calibers).

Nice. OK, how did you bond the brass to the steel? Solder? Epoxy? Pin it somehow? I was eager to see what you did coz I have a front sight that needs something similar. Mine is on a 1888 Trapdoor, it's a little teeny skinny blade WAYYY out there on the end of that long barrel. By the time I can find the damn thing, I forget what I was shooting at. Also I need to make it higher, rifle shoots high at distances I can see. I'm thinking some kind of sleeve...

Rosin core lead free solder and paste Flux. Low and slow on the flame to tin both. Clean. Reflux. Clamp and heat till it melts again then let it cool slow. File and Polish.

Trap door is sposed to hit high. Belt buckle hold at battle zero is good to 200 or 300 yds if I recall. Often the sights front and rear are mixed up. There were about 3 sets of sights depending on the year of mfg. And bbl length. And bullet weight. And velocity. (carbine/rifle bbl, at least 3 405g loadings and at least 1 500g load)

That's a Lotta sight variables.

Thanks. Yeah I know it's spozed ta shoot high, it was made to shoot at much longer range than my old eyes can see. My sights are good, I have the Buffington rear sight, but even at the lowest setting I'm about a foot high at 100 yd. But the main thing is just finding that little teeny front blade way out there in the next ZIP code. I'll see what I can come up with. Do you find the brass makes it easier to find the front sight on the Ruger? I guess it depends on the conditions...

Brass is good. Wide helps but covers too much of the bull. Beads or patridge are great. Try white or orange paint first. Build it up with jb weld to make it higher and wider. When ya have the height ya want and color then seek a more perminant fix.

Ive got some Idaho gold in the front sight of one of mine. I’ll get a picture up here shortly
