US Marines get butt kicked...

Noooo! It must have been the Kobayasi Maru.

Sounds like a good thing to me. I shot myself in the wrist with a sim gun when I took ECQC. Big fail. Got a scar on my wrist. But (a) I kept on fighting anyway (though like most fights I was in during ECQC I lost) and (b) I got a very very solid lesson about shooting in a real deal retention situation that I will never forget and couldn't have gotten unless I failed in that way.

I hope our Marines fail a LOT in training.

Hell the brits probably stopped for tea while they were doing it.

The BRM commandos are top notch troops. Without knowing what unit they were up against I can’t say if this was bad, really bad or meh.

If WW3 started today we would suffer great casualties till we learned how to fight a war again.

It always that way.

So f-ing what some Marines in training lost at laser tag.

If I could tell you the number of times we lost laser tag, its not even funny. You are to learn in training

If I cold tell you the number of times we lost laser tag, its not even funny. You are to learn in training

The US military contingent did not respond to questions. I think the speed at which they were routed was a big concern, not necessarily that they lost.

It's not that they 'lost', it's that they 'surrendered'. (The Marines I know talk up the fact that they just don't surrender or quit.)

Not really a "fair" comparison though, The UK Royal Marines are an elite group. Better match would have been Raiders/SEALS/Rangers/ etc.

Me and some Marines from my platoon did an exchange tour with them. No, they aren't equal. I think though in this instance they were looking at specific capabilities based on their Littoral Defense Groups, which pared it down some.

Well sooner or later some of the dumb policy changes had to have an effect.

Ummm, well, actually might want to give them credit for:

My Canadian friends often remind me that they did that- under the auspices of the Crown, of course but they forget that so I often remind them back...
At least we didn't ask the Queen for permission for our independence!

In case anyone is interested, here is a follow up article: https://news.usni.org/2021/12/06/u-s-international-marines-duke-it-out-in-the-california-desert

Some excerpts:

“The points of the 3rd Marines surrendering is not accurate. This type of exercise is not one where either side surrenders,” Coote said. “There was a pause two hours before the end of the exercise on the final day to decide if we wanted to carry on and exploit some extra training opportunity or end the exercise there. The article is not completely accurate in the surrender aspect.”

“There are no winners. There are no losers. Everybody is a winner, because everybody learned and gets better as a unit and as an individual Marine during an exercise like MWX,” he said.

A British review paper is behind some sort of pay or, at least, join-wall: https://rusi.org/explore-our-resear...defence-systems/lessons-exercise-green-dagger

Does make one wonder whether by "extra training opportunity" the speaker meant "life as a POW."

In most exercises there are pause points, a training timeout, to discuss things. Also, exercises have measurable outcomes, things like "by end of day 2 this unit will advance X miles while achieving Y", and opfor winning/losing is usually irrelevant.

The more I've read about this the more I'm convinced there's no 'there' there
