For some time Ive wondered if a gunvault metal box is adequate compromise in vehicle for a number of problems. Vehicles need to carry firearms and firearms in vehicles need to be legal, reasonably accessable, and reasonably protected.

So one solution is a locked metal gunvault, maybe a nanovault300 like below,, atgached to a metal cable that is wrapped around a piece of the car. The gunvault would be kept hidden in the car, but well-hidden.

What do you think

I have something. Similar, I think it works reasonably well.
Better would be to bolt it down in a difficult to get fingers and a pry bar to location

Been using exact same for years. Fits perfect in every center console I tried and the consoles close over the cable. Cable tucked and nothing shows. Can also lash to passenger seat post and stow in the passenger seat back pocket. Its a very easy reach for the driver that way as well. Handy when you are armed but just cant' take it in the building with you. Someone'll come on and piss about it being thin metal. Remember, its time where criminals are concerned. The box buys some time on a theft and that is often good enough. Fine investment for $20 combine it with a locked door, rolled up windows and not making a habit of parking in the bad neighborhoods and for the most part, you'll have no worries..

I have the same setup in my F150. The critical things are the attachment point and location.

The Tacoma had a center console that could be modified to have a 'hide hole' in front of the shifter.

DITTO. Nanovault 100 works great for me!

I have one bolted with Chicago screws inside my passenger seat compartment. its hidden and unless you have a crowbar it wont come out easy.

I use one in my truck and it works well.

I have one and use it when I have to - as little as possible. I think it's a step up from the glove box but it's not going to stop anything but a smash and grab. If I had to use it daily I would look for a more secure option. I can't say if it works or not because nobody has tried to take it to my knowledge.
Mine uses a key and is TSA approved for air travel, so that's useful.

I think it's a great compromise. Certainly won't stop a motivated thief with time on his hands, but will deter a smash and grab.

I have one under each seat of the van. Cheap insurance and lets me keep a gun in there. I have a larger box bolted down in the extra cab of my truck.

still do your best to hide it, a decent screwdriver is a substitute key

I have one like this. http://www.sportys.com/preferredliving/the-club-car-vault-safe.html
It is attached to the drivers seat rail and I keep it tucked under the seat. I only use it to lock up my sidearm when I go into a spot that I cant carry. It should deter anyone who breaks into the car looking to pilfer. Beats trying to hide it in a console or glove box where it is sure to get stolen.

If they make one to fit your vehicle, the Console Vault is a great option, although not cheap. I do use the NanoVault when flying, attached inside my suitcase.

I have a fort knox small vault that fits in my console of the landcruiser, much more sturdy and secure install...

Have your local body guy or auto tech build you a hidden compartment. Kind of like what they use to smuggle drugs and cash in. If they do not know it is there they can't steal it.

I have one in each vehicle and another I keep in luggage to lock up pistols when I visit my grandchildren. I prefer the combination locks. I loop the cables around the seat mounts.

I have three of the Gunvault Nanovault. I also have one by Snapsafe, which may be a little heavier duty.

Does anyone know of a source for extra cables, or longer cables? I would like a little more room to pull the lockboxes into my lap from under the seat. The ones I have located are either thinner (and therefore weaker) or too fat to fit. The size that comes with it is what I would like.

You can make one as long as you want. Lowes has the braided cable and the crimp things.
Don't quote me on the plastic coated cable, but I've seen the steel cable on spools.
I've seen aircraft grade and/or stainless cable that was real nice. The stuff is out there. As long as you have a method to crimp, you're good to go.
