My Christmas present finally arrived and I am so excited. Look what my wife got me for Christmas!

I haven't hung it on the wall or cut the foam yet. I just grabbed a couple of guns and layed them in there so you all can see how big it is.

It's 4 feet long, 2.5 feet tall, and 6 inches thick.

I don't even know where to hang it or what guns to put inside it. Do any of you ladies or gentlemen have any recommendations? Any tips before I mount it?

Thats awesome mind shareing where it came from? Might have to look into one.
My wife ordered from a dude on Etsy who makes them from scratch. When she gets home, I'll ask for his "seller name" and update this comment.

It's really well constructed. Everything lines up properly. The doors open perfectly. Nothing rubbing in the wrong places.

Wow. That is really cool. Looking forward to seeing the link you provide. Could always find some wall space for something like that.

Looks well built and heavy. Any guesstimate as to the weight @Alabamacoastie ? Nicely done by your wife!

It is solid wood and top quality foam... I haven't weighed it, but it's at least 40 pounds, maybe 50...

That looks great, but I'm thinking it should have been a table or bench. A 6" thick flag on the wall may actually look like it's hiding something.

Exactly... I have been thinking about this. I have to pick a place to mount it where it won't be conspicuous to thieves...

My wife thinks above a mantel would work. I was thinking if you had another feature in your house like that space on the left in the first pic.

If it's just placed somewhere like that and maybe leaned back a little, it wouldn't scream "there's something inside me!"

I could cut out the dry wall and mount it directly to the studs. That would sink it into the wall the same depth as the thickness of drywall. What's that, half an inch or three quarters of an inch?

Yeah, I see the slight differences between the two! Either way, cool idea and I’ve been contemplating it since I saw your post. Just need something smaller for where I’d like to place it.

You could cut the drywall out to fit and you’d get 1/2 to 3/4 inch inset. You’d have to careful on your cutout and removal of the drywall or you’ll have to conceal the cut drywall edge with molding. It would take a well cut, tight fit to have it look good.

I would do the recess in the wall unless you may take it to another location soon. Drywall is cheap and easy to repair if the paint color is still available.

I liked the picture frame concealment piece for one handgun. Glad You started this thread.

Meh...cut the drywall and notch the studs. Mount it so only the doors are sticking out. Screwed into the studs it would be fairly secure and not look as suspicious. Commit!! :D

My wife got me something similar for my office for Christmas. I just mounted it into the studs and looks great, however I dont think Ill rely on it to house a firearm. I prefer a safe but it is a nice option.

I'm too skeered to notch out the studs...

I agree with you on the importance of keeping guns in the safe most of the time... But, I work from home so I am almost always here, day and night. And I'm always armed, whether at home or in town.

I'm going to mount it and put guns in it, but I will take them out and put them into a safe before I go anywhere like a vacation, weekend getaway, etc.

And it looks very nice, by the way. My wife went with the plain US flag because she didn't know any better and it was a secret. I would have picked something more gun rights oriented, like your wife did.

I too work from home and was thinking like you, I might put an AR in there for the hell of it. Will be interested how you cut the foam.

Oh man... I'm more nervous about cutting the foam than i am about mounting the damn thing. I hope i don't mess it up. I've never cut foam to fit a gun before.

This is very cool! Where did you find this beauty?
My wife ordered it from a guy on Etsy. Link is listed by me in a comment above. I am extremely happy with it. Fine craftsmanship...

You can come by and hang the one I've had in the closet for about 8 months lol. In return you can borrow my foam cutter :)

Looks great!

Will you post up a side view pic?

It's not set into the wall. I decided not to go to all that trouble. It's got 4 lag bolts drilled into the studs, but I didn't remove any dry wall.

That's one hell of a trade... I'd totally do that. Will you show me how to use the cutter too?

Sure would. I'm pretty sure I have some spare foam around here to practice on. Seriously though, without coming over to hang it, you can borrow the foam cutter.

I'm still curious how it looks from the side. I wasn't thinking a half or a 3/4" sink would make much difference.

Glad you didn't cut the sheetrock. :D

That looks great! Good wife you have there sir. I like the unicorn also.

I really appreciate the offer, but I just found out this thing came with a special kind of foam called Kaizen... It's made from many thin layers that peel apart. I just found this video on YouTube and I'm going to be able to do this with just an adjustable razor knife that I already have.

Check this out:

Here you go kcult!

Please don't judge me by the clutter on the book case or the unicorn stencil on my wife's desk...

Too late... lol

It doesn't jut out as much as I thought. And I bet if you were to apply some sort of patriotic graphic to that plain side board, it would even less conspicuous.
