Anyone actually use this?? I was thinking of switching at the next oil change. I've been told that oil is oil if it has the same standard ratings on the bottle...then I've been told the additive package is different. Seems to me its kinda like Mil-spec is Mil-spec for an analogy.

Thoughts?

Oil companies do their own testing for specs. Some just barely make it, some far exceed them and some miss them. I would stick with a name brand. JMO.

I use to have a beater 94 Honda Accord that I ran the Super Tech Synthetic in. When I bought it it had 160000 miles on it. I started using it then, and now my dad has the car, with 258000 on it the last time I asked. He had to replace a valve cover gasket, and said the top of the valve train looked great, with no build up or sludge whatsoever. We do 5000 mile oci's on it, with a puralator filter, and so far, so good. I also read a write up on it on bobistheoilguy.com from a dude that ran it to 5000 miles, and sent it off to get a oil analysis done, and it checked out pretty good.

I use it in the ole Ford. Have 363,000 and going strong. I ALWAYS use a quart of Lucas and a Motorcraft filter. Check the API service rating. Most oil is the same, different companies add different detergents and additives to call it their own. Oil cannot be sold as a certain API service rating if it does not meet the specifications.

This makes me think I should ask the Ford dealership what they use in my F 150! I just take it in every 5K and they do their thing. Haven't ever really even looked at the invoice. I used to be more involved in that sort of stuff. I feel like a slacker.

Yes it can. The companies do their own testing and the API spot checks. Coastal has been caught before with out of spec oil. I am sure Wally World buys from someone else who labels it SuperTech and we all know that WW never pressures vendors to cut their prices. Use what you want. I used to drive company cars to 100k and sometimes didn't change the oil for 25k and never checked levels. Never once had an oil related engine problem but I would never do that with my personal vehicles. Oil changes are cheap even with top shelf products. Why take a chance?

I get a discount at Greensboro NAPA stores and first time I bought oil and filters for my new jeep I bought a case of NAPA synthetic blend. With my discount I get it for 2 something a quart and it's made by valvoline

I use a lot of the NAPA branded stuff.

So what oil did they use in the company car? How is this relevant? I have been using Super Tech oil for over 6ish years, and never had a problem. I have personal experience with this oil. Do you? Got a link to Coastal selling this oil? Not meeting specs? I searched quickly on Google and nothing turned up. I'm not saying it didn't happen I would just like to have a look see for myself. :)

The same people that bottle motorcraft oil may very well bottle supertech and 2 dozen other brands.

Same goes for air filters, oil filters, etc......

Why risk a motor that can cost 4-5k to replace over 5 bucks a oil change. Makes no sense to me. People trying to be cheap in repairing and maintaining there cars very often end up costing themselves big time. People that have a leaking a/c system are a good example. They will charge the system over and over until all the oil escapes through the leak and instead of replacing a hose or a evap core now their compressor has locked up and sent metal through the whole system. That $200 job just turned into a $1500 job. I see it every day it just makes me shake my head. I almost forgot to add that Toyota motors are the most expensive to replace next to the exotic stuff.

True...But why pay more for the same thing. If dukes mayo packages Walmart brand mayo...Why pay more for dukes if the Walmart brand is the same stuff----just an example as I have no clue as to who makes Wally's mayo.

And our bodies are a lot more important than an engine! What about generic drugs...Same thing. Why pay more for name brand if the generic is less expensive and does the same thing.

I think there is enough evidence to say that supertech oil is not only safe...But good oil. I do 5k oci's. Like someone posted above.. Probably could use Wesson oil but I'm not taking that chance. I'm gonna use something designed for the purpose that has the stamps that it meets the requirements of the oil.

The additives and base oils are the keys. Oil has changed a lot over the past few decades. Oils used to contian high concentrations of zinc to help protect high friction areas from wear such as cams and lifters, but since most manufacturers have made the switch to roller cams in modern engines the need for that has declined so they have removed most of that. For us hot rodders that still run these old style motors to get that same protection we have to use stuff not originaly intended for this job like Rotella 15w40 or a high zinc oil made by amsoil. Walmart stuff is cheaper for a reason and they have products made just for them. It is a gamble I would not take. Generic drugs often do not work as well as the name brand in some occasions also. 5 years working in the hospital taught me that one.
