Weekly snake thread

I’ve seen multiple black snakes around here already but this cold weather could drive them back in for a bit. It’s snowing in the mountains tonight and calling for it again Friday night and Sunday night. I might need a cabin trip!

Looks like a Ping but I could be wrong.:)

ha, It was laying against the fence in the backyard when we bought here. I don't golf ( I do have clubs for that) so it gets used as a chase the neighborhood strays off the yard, thrown at squrrels in the garden and a snake stick.

I no longer use me bronze putter as a snake stick. All I have is an old fishing rod with no eyelets, for whackin' copperhaids without damaging their skins. If'n they are not a copperhaid, I pick 'em up by the tail, Steve Irwin style, so as to avoid hurting them. If I want to catch 'em and the tail is not showin', I'll jus' grab 'em... if they bit, so be it.

New neighbors have king snakes,
I do not,
hate new neighbors.

3' black snake in the yard the other day, tried crossing the road but the little guy was scared. Anytime a person was remotely close he'd retreat back to the bush. I didnt really care except for the goose and geese eggs up under that bush. But that little guy couldnt have eaten those eggs anyway, I dont think.

I'll take a snake over a goose, any day. Lol

Finally got me one!! What exactly is he? I tried to brush the ring off of his neck thinking it was a piece of dried grass. Docile little fellow.

Ring-necked snake. No kidding. Lol
I accidentally ran over one here with the mower 2 years ago- little tiny fella, it bothered me cuz they're so harmless. Bright orange ring-

whole bunch of snakes were out on the roads tonight. One looked like a copperhead. Anyway, lots of cold rain, roads were still warm. snakes were happy on the mostly empty road.
one or two became very unhappy though. same as a few frogs that jumped right under my wheels as I was driving along. I'll swerve if I can, but i'm not risking sliding off the road into a swamp for a little frog...

I had a little fat black snake about 5 1/2'-6' long crossing the drive way this afternoon. I believe it was a female full of eggs she was so fat. I took her out in the woods and turned her loose in a hollow in a big oak tree. Hopefully she will get the squirrels that are using it.

Question: those snakes (most snakes) will not strike if you try to pick them up. I understand that most snakes are venomous but I do not like being struck at.

Actually most are NOT venomous. This one today was not very happy and would draw back and strike at me.

I used my snake tongs today, first time, to catch her and then picked her up.

I've caught a lot of snakes in my life and it is really interesting how some will strike, bite and shit all over you and some will act they have been picked up by friendly humans their whole lives!

Some species always seem to bite (racers) and some are more docile (ringnecks and dekay's) while some just seem to have individual personalities (rat snakes)

Ok I'm about sure I should've let this little fellar go but the wife and daughter insisted he be dispatched. Can somebody tell what I killed?

Had 4 of these flee before my push mower yesterday. Couldn't get a picture of the head as the little guy kept on moving. They are never more than 10-12 inches long.

I always leave them alone or relocate them. Do they eat spiders? My yard is always full of them.
Not sure. Here is what I was able to google.

"Brown snakes eat food that is easily accessible both underground and out in the open. They are prime predators of slugs, snails and earthworms and play an important role in controlling the population of those animals. They are also known to eat salamanders, beetles and soft-bodied grubs. Their teeth and jaws are specially adapted to quickly and easily pull snails out of their shells, wrote Harding."

Had a nice black racer show up Monday. Son went out to shoot basketball around 9am and went through the garage to the driveway. Snake must have come in over night and was up against the garage door. Son opened the door and it slithered off into the storage room in the garage. This turned into an impromptu cleaning out of the storage room and organizing it trying to find the snake and get it out. Ended up being around 5 feet. He was pretty aggressive, more so than the last one we found. He sprayed that nasty musk in the storage room when I was trying to pull him out from under some wire shelves. Ended up carrying him out in the backyard to watch him for a few minutes and then directed him towards a natural area.

Opened back door to this little one hanging out in the flower bed today by the steps and got to point it out to the kids. Left it alone but the wife was not real impressed. It was a bit shy trying to hide under the mulch before going on.

I had this deadly green mamba in my garage yesterday, lol. I was working in the garden when my wife came told me there was a snake in the garage the reason for the dirty hands.

Nice, I've only seen one green grass snake in ten years here. For some reason I'm thinking they're a bit scarce?

First one I have seen in about 40 years. I put him in my raised bed garden.

Rescued this from the neighbors yesterday. Also have video of me taking one out of a bird house. I’ll try to get it up today
