Weekly snake thread

Black Rat Snake is a good guess... corn snakes are called red rat snakes. Patterning is classic corn snake, especially on top of the haid.

But it's located in Biscoe... tha's a anerythristic corn snake.

The word around my Wake Forest neighborhood is that the copperheads are out and around with all the rain. I guess I'll have to hit with the flame thrower to clear out the yard.

Any suggestions on how to deter them from my yard? I have a young, curious puppy that loves the bushes.

i double checked and made sure there were no snakes before i moved to clemmons - so, sorry i wont be contributing to this thread.

well my luck ran out - this guy got in my house

How are the ones you done with antifreeze holding up?
Very good shovel work, Jayne... didn't hurt the skin atall... an' you froze it so you can send it to me, right?

Went to the range today and while heading to the portajon to "shake the snake" I ran across what's left of this little guy. I'm pretty good with my herpatology but can't remember a blue one native to NC. Only thing I can figure is a little green snake turned blue after being chopped in half and stomped by someone earlier in the day.

Anyone have any other ideas? It was blue, a blue between UNpee and pUKE blue. Both halves were this color and total length would have been in the 20inchish range.

PS this is a non-venomous snake. It ain't no diamond-headed-timber-mouthed-pigmy-viper-big-ole-BAMF snake lol

I think you're right about the green snake idea. My Google-fu found this......

The snake's green color is made up of blue and yellow pigments in its skin. When it dies, the yellow fades more quickly, so the snake looks blue.

My hurrican snake, can anyone tell me what it is? Black on top with faint pattern, white underside with greenish blobs. Didn't want to get any closer to see the pattern.

Hurricane snake has look and behavior of a black rat snake. Underside might have been a kinda sorta checkerboard pattern that stopped and became black for the rear two thirds.

Hadn't heard that about dead green snakes, but they are long and skinny. Only other option is a young indigo snake, but they are deep black with hints of dark dark blue, not pale like the picture.

Thanks yea just googled what you said. That's pretty cool.

This one was in the road near my mailbox a few Saturdays ago. I've killed at least 3 copperheads on the road near my house, and another 4 on my property in the last 2 years.

Heard a loud noise coming from my downstairs HVAC unit around dusk, so I turned it off and went to see what was causing the noise. Took the grate off the top and saw this

Needless to say, I stopped and checked around my flip flop-wearing feet thoroughly, then removed the body. Not how I wanted, or expected, to spend my evening.

I already killed a copperhead just this afternoon. 380 to the head....I didn’t have my phone with me to take photos and I don’t like snakes but my dog and I were walking and he jumped out at us as we walked in the yard and well, that was his fatal mistake.

Last year I killed 5 or 6 on and around my property and another at my part time job .

This guy had a run in with our cat today. It was only about a foot long, but my wife was not happy to have a live snake in the screened in porch.

This will be our third year here, and for whatever reason, we don't have copperheads. With a small creek down the hill and a decent frog population, I figured we would have a few, but I have yet to see any.
We don't really have black snakes, either. I have seen several snakes over the last couple years, can't tell one from another except to say they aren't copperheads or black snakes.
We've just been lucky, I guess.

Draco88, it's likely you have a few king snakes in residence. This time of year you will probably see some. "Good snakes".

I shot our first Range Invader 2 weeks ago. Garvin stopped dead still with Larry behind. I won't be killin anymore this year. Since we no longer have chicks all things here are safe. I have seen 1 poisonous snake here in 15 years. A small Pilot. I stomped him.

We've got a large bird of prey population here, including golden eagles & very rarely see snakes. 2 of my Dachshunds have made it their personal mission to eat every animal they can run down, so there likely isn't much of a food supply to attract 'em.

Garter snake up against my house under some leaves I was cleaning up. I told him to do a good job eating all the slugs under my deck.

Wife had a small rattle snake just outside her classroom at dismissal time yesterday. Sounded like it was almost a headline maker.

That’s a Dekays Brown snake. Either way, good job on leaving it be. They eat lots of small pests

I think you are right. Previously I thought he looked like this, but I do see some differences. I'm amazed at the color variations on eastern garter snakes.
