Weekly snake thread

I saw a baby rattlesnake or maybe copperhead smooshed on the road while running the other day...
Never have I ever seen a camo pattern like that in real life... It was almost bluish skin, with orange diamonds, the sucker was only about 1/2 inch thick, and maybe 8 inches long... anyone know what it was???

The orange pattern on that length of snake would indicate hognose for me. The blueish sheen is likely from it just being hatched. Same thing happens with snakes that have just shed.

Hard to say for sure without a picture though.

Yeah, I will try to get a pic later tonight if it is even still there...
I did look it up, looks like maybe a Pygmy rattler?

lots of snakes fall into that color scheme. did you see the rattle or were you assuming?

And good luck with finding it later. around here roadkill won't last through the night critters. if something gets killed early in the day, it likely won't make it past the buzzards to see night.

At 8 inches long, it won't have a rattle yet.

In Guilford county?

Yep!
Right near where Oceala road becomes Oceola Ossipi road
Shouldn’t be a rattler of any kind. We don’t have those here.

Ok well maybe it wasnt a rattler,
based on the coloring and a stock photo of a pygmy rattler, the coloring was very similar. I only caught a short glimpse of its smooshed carcass while running by...

When I pulled the well cover this morning, this guy was looking at me. I don’t recognize the pattern, by his body cross section and head pattern, he’s a Rat snake.
The snake was very calm and my grandson wanted to hold him as well.

Then I decided to show the 65lb dame bramaged Rottie the snake. Surprisingly the snake struck over a 6” distance and latches onto a nostril. The dog was shaking her head all over the place & the snake didn’t let go for a bit. The snake and dog are fine, I almost wet myself laughing.

Couldn’t take any pictures but the wife and I were reorganizing the garage yesterday and I found a 6-8” rat snake when I moved one of the boxes. Quickly picked him up and put him in the flower bed outside the garage. Wife doesn’t like snakes but tolerates the non-venomous ones in the yard. If she had seen this one, she would have burned down the whole house, just to be sure

This feller was sleeping under the tarp on my wood pile this past week. Got to looking close and it looks like one of his eyes ( left) is bad.

About a foot long. A little bigger around than a pencil. What do I have here?

^^^ They come off big but usually calm down when handled. Especially right now on the cooler nights it aught to like to be held for the warmth.

Juvenile black rat snake. He's a good one!!
That was my first guess. Didn’t kill it, just move it to the storm drain since I was out with the pup. Drain runs to my backyard, so I’ll probably see it again.

That’s a nice looking snek

I will jump in the truck and drive to Sophia right now if you will give me that timber rattler!
You are welcome to the skin. But I want the rattles. First one for me.
I'll PM an address if ya want it.

I popped the hood of my wife’s Jeep this evening. It was dark and I noticed a snake near the windshield.

His head was INSIDE THE HOOD. He was moving, disappearing into the channel of sheet metal along the side.

I’m no seasoned snake-handler... I didn’t move quick enough to grab his tail and pull him back.

He’s still in there. I don’t even know if he has a path to exit.

Not my pic, but he went thataway.....
is your car on a hill? can you just push it and let it roll down the driveway? unfortunately - thats the only solution

Basil not only gave me his roadkill, but threw in another... curing the new and reconstituting the old with antifreeze.
