Someone handed me a gun at the Battery Oaks M&G recently with unusual (to me) sights. The rear was a green circle, the front a green dot, and you got the front dot centered in the rear circle, and then were good to go, I guess. lol.

What are these things called? Who had these sights on their gun, and can I shoot it some time to see how the sights work for me?
Thanks!

Were they ghost ring sights?

I was there with you when we were looking at it. I'm bad with names but I think it was Allen.
I liked those sights, but I should have tried the gun out to see if they worked for me....lol. I think it was Allen, now that you mention it! (I must be getting senile.)

PS I bet you can only get them on that particular gun, right?? LOL.

As much as I poo-pooed the idea when I saw it online, I also found the sight picture pretty interesting when he let me have a look. My only doubt continues to be about carrying that gun as part of a rotation. Would the shooter hesitate because the sights aren’t in “the normal place”.

carrying that gun as part of a rotation.
So just carry the one gun! LOL. Problem solved....though I know how you have a different gun for everything, so that won't work for you!

:p

It takes a bit to get used to. I looked at it like... Wth do I do with this when I picked it up and there "were no sights on it". But, it's gets to be intuitive. 20191026_125117.jpg 20191026_125111.jpg

I think it is hard to pick up the front sight, the alignment does not come easy from a holster draw. The peep sights work good on rifle where you have a cheek weld process but not so with a handgun.

I hope to try these out really soon, and see how it goes for me. I usually have to paint my sights in different colors so I can see them, so maybe something like this would be helpful to me....and my aging eyes. lol.

I was just about to type exactly this. Conventional wisdom is that when it happens you won't have time to get a perfect sight picture so most instructors drill in the act of acquiring the front sight which is the most important thing, how much of the rear sight you use depends on the time available and situation. I want open sights that I can use for a "good enough" sight picture, not an "all or nothing" setup where I have to look through a hole.

This is why I love this forum! I get a lot of info to mull over.

I admit this is probably more psychological than anything, I would just "feel" like I had to put the damn front sight in the circle, whereas with an open sight there's no definitive border.

Definitely not a precision sight. For close up work where you can put the combination of dot and circle on a body, while both eyes are open , yes. Somewhere, around here I have an Aerotek(?) set similar to the others posted for a Glock. I played with them a little, but I found the combined lset obscured too much of the target unless the target was really big and close. It's a lot of sight in the way of your sight picture. It's not like a ghost ring sight on a long gun where the rear is close to your eyes and it "ghosts" effectively disappearing and you can still see the target through the sight. I love ghost rings and aperature sights on shotguns and rifles. This is just my experience with the version I played with. I like being able to take a longer range precision shot, if I so choose. Maybe, the SIG version is better, But, if you try them, try taking a head shot at a littel distance. YMMV

As others have said, front sight is the key. I'll put white appliance touch-up on mine and if I have some sort of color on the rear, I'll marker them out, so that the front stands out, Even tritium rears. Which by the way still glows through the marker, but subdued. In daylight, looks black.
