https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/ne...d-breaking-kill-shot-in-iraq/article35415651/

A sniper with Canada's elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.

That is an amazing feat. It seems like the record for longest shot has been broken several times in the last few years. This one really shattered it. It's getting to be like watching the home run record go up back when all the baseball players were taking andro etc....

Holy crap, over 2 miles???

What sort of optic would one need for that distance?

Well I would say MERICA but eh I guess this one deserves CANADIA!!!!!! I hope his spotter gets just as much recognition.

Helluva shot: 2.1 miles. At that range, you'd never know what hit you.

I wonder how many rounds it took to nail the bad guy. If the guy hit the insurgent with a cold-bore shot, that would elevate him to near-immortal status!

Merged the two threads, leaving the oldest one as the original.

Any of the Chinese made offerings with all the bells and whistles. It's really good glass for the mooouu......mooouehch.....<swallow> the money.
Almost couldn't get that out, felt sick for a minute.

He probably used one of those with TWO lasers on it

I'm sure it was this one.

It is a sniper scope after all.

The reticle changes colors! How cool is that!

If it's the one I remember reading about it took him 6 shots to hit the guy. A bad guy is a bad guy.... But I prefer the one shot one hit thing.... ( Have to mess with"em because they from up there :) )

Thaaaaat sounds more like it.

I'm all for killing bad guys, good job.

Skill only gets you so far. These guys that make long shots have skill. There comes a point however where luck and Divine intervention take over.

And a very good, methodical spotter to dial you in.

from https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/canadian-sniper-reportedly-shot-isis-143631123.html

"TM Gibbons-Neff, a reporter for The Washington Post who previously served as a US Marine Corps sniper, expressed skepticism over the claim in a post on Twitter. At such a long distance, he said, the tiniest adjustment to the sniper's windage or elevation settings on the scope could result in a bullet being wildly off course when it got to its target.

There's also the question of the power of the rifle's optic, and whether it could actually make out a human at such an incredible distance."

.

So then, if you flock shoot ducks, they don't count against your limit?

I don't see how that is relevant. If you shoot the eight ball in a pocket other than what you called do you win?

How can it count if he didn't mean to do it? Technically he missed. He goes down in history as the sniper with the longest confirmed kill, but really he meant to shoot the guy next to the one he hit? Nah. Haha, I can do a lot of shit on accident.

This is just crazy impressive, crushed the former record by 1km!

I'm really curious what the bullet drop is like at that distance!! I've got to imagine it's something like 250-300ft lol

Well, it's a good thing you don't write the standards then, isn't it?

I could not care less if the got the guy at whom he was aiming, the guy beside him, behind him, or the one nailing the goat in the corner. I am happy he killed a bad guy. THAT makes it a successful shot, and ANY sniper would tell you that.

Well a machine gunner may have the record if you don't have to hit what you are exactly aiming at! ;)

I, too, am happy for that. However, if the the person he hit on accident was a civilian would you still consider it a successful shot? I seriously doubt ANY sniper would consider missing a success... I guess you're right, it's a good thing I don't write the standards....because that doesn't count in my book.

EDIT: cant type good

That is not what he is even insinuating.

Everyone is happy he killed the bad guy.
He may be a great shot, I'm sure he is, but flinging bullets till you hit a target is not evidence of fantastic shooting. It IS evidence of unlucky targets.

When you get past a mile, luck stacking becomes geometric.
Been there, seen it, watched it( not in the sandbox and shooting people), held the rounds in my hand, all impressive equipment and gadgets. It's all a stunt.
I'm all for it too, kill em where and when you can. Heck I've done stunts at long range too.
It's a stunt.

What @The Green Heron posted above is true.

I tell a story in my PR classes to this point.

Back in 2003 during the first 96 hours of the Iraq war I was spotting for a Sniper shooting a M107. We had a bad dude leaning out of a window of a concrete factory. He would lean out and shoot down the road or spray the Ally near him and our fellow 82nd guys.

At 1450m we shot 1 1/2 mags of APIT at him. Never once did we get closer then 3ft from contact.

We were able to distract him.

But at that kind of distance luck is stackable
