I had heard it could happen, but this was the first failure I have ever had. It blew the ejector clean off. I think it actually hit my 6 year old son luckily he is fine and was a good lesson for him to see why we wear eye protection. We could not find it though. I assumed S&W will take care of this in warranty I am calling them tomorrow

Hmmm... maybe Appleseed knew what they were doing when they banned those.

I have shot mine a LOT and nothing like that has happened.

Check for a recall or similar. I remember something about the factory putting in blue springs as replacements and that was the telltale that it had been fixed..

I had my machine gun cook off out of battery before and got brass in my hand. It was 9mm.

Definitely not a fun experience

I just got it back from S&W they repaired under warranty. I am going to take it and test fire it then put it up for sale. I got this one for my 6 year son to shoot since we could adjust the stock. However, the hammer will still drop out of battery. I do not know if it will still fire out of battery though, but I just do not want to risk it with him.

Mine did the exact same thing after firing several thousand trouble free rounds. It's going back to Smith and Wesson next week. Too bad, it's my favorite 22 semi-auto, hope I don't have to wait too long to get it back. OOB ignition does happen occasionally with many blowback operated guns.

I finally had a chance to call S&W customer service yesterday. They are sending an extractor, spring and plunger to me for free. No need to ship my rifle because it is already in the latest configuration according to the serial number. The parts should arrive before the weekend.

Remington thunder-turds have made both my marlin 60's fire out of battery before. They've never had that issue with any other ammo, but the thunderbolts are just dirty and sticky.

What's the difference in a regular 15-22 and a performance center model?

I'll never shoot, or let be shot, a Remington Thunderbolt through any gun I own.

It's weird, but it's like the perfect storm of horrible rimfire ammo. Despite all accounts, they never improve it. Man, it sucks.

I know people that never had a problem with it. People I trust, gunwise. I just know in my heart of hearts there is a Thunderturd cartridge somewhere waiting.......patiently....quietly......in a benign-enough-looking green box (with neat lighting boltz).......waiting for the purchase of a Volquartsen or Cooper...... to blow up, or somehow destroy, or at the very least, lead up the barrel.

Yeah, big fan here.

edit: sorry, went kinda rogue with the punctuation and what have you

IIRC the PC model has some magpul furniture and a bull barrel, and I think it also has a Gieselle trigger.
I've shot one and really couldn't justify (for myself) the added cost. It was also considerably heavier, like way heavier, and it didn't score any better than the standard model on the targets. I suppose if you were trying to shoot at 200 yards it would probably perform up to it's potential.

I have a ton of it from the days of the famine... Don't know what to do with it...

I finally received the extractor, plunger and spring from S&W last week. Everything assembled easily. 500 rounds each of Federal and CCI standard cycled perfectly yesterday at the range.

I really hope I never have an issue with mine. (Yeah, I know...jinxed myself). I'm not sure what they'd say about my 4.5" 15-22 barrel. o_O

Not to pile on about ammo but across my handful of .22's including 2 different 15-22's, Remington thunderbolt and golden bullets have always had a high failure rate for me. When I stick to CCI, zero issues, and fed/win bulk are nearly trouble free with the occasional failure to feed.

The CCI Tactical says right on the box it was designed for the M&P 15-22. I sent 400 rounds of it downrange in mine last week, zero problems. Other stuff, occasional misfeed, but it hasn't blown up my rifle like yours. You can get it on sale for about $19 for 300.

That's the only 22 ammo I use now.

My Walther P22 choked on that Thunderbolt junk on numerous occasions. Never had a problem with the CCI.

I have a Colt M4 22 caliber rifle and it has never had a problem. Only ammo used has been the CCI tactical.

The quality of some of the high quantity boxes of 22 is lacking

In '96 I noticed what looked like little dimples in my BRAND NEW VQ and MKII Comp Slab Side barrels. I called Ruger and they asked only one question, "Did you use Remington Thunderbolts?", "yes", "Send us the gun and we'll replace the barrel. Never use Remington ammo in the gun again."
I avoid everything from a green box.
