Not meant to start a war but curious...what actions is everyone using? Im leaning towards a curtis axiom however I always worry about the longevity of a company...meaning in 10 years would I be able to get replacement parts if needed. The Bighorn Origin seems budget friendly as well.

Purpose would be an all around build. Hunt, range queen, minimal competition use (if any at all)...

I've built two Remage's off bone of stock Rem 700 SA's that are both absolute hammers! Probably thanks in large part to the Criterion pre-fit barrels on them.

However, for the money I don't think you can go wrong with a Bighorn Origin action. It has a pinned lug option, a 20 MOA rail, takes Savage small shank barrels, five options of interchangeable bolt knobs, and you can change the bolt face...all that for just $825 and it's Rem 700 footprint!! No brainer in my book if it's within your budget. I know it's the next action I'm purchasing for a future custom build.

Yeah, if I was really into PRS I would go bigger but I'm leaning very heavily towards the Origin with a Bartlein. I think with those pieces and decent ammo it would be shooter error rather than the equipment.

Even for PRS I think an Origin would serve all your current needs and with swappable bolt faces allow you to experiment or even build a .223Rem trainer. I've seen enough high dollar actions have feeding issues or bind up when you try to run the bolt fast

A Bartlein barrel is a great choice, but have you considered offerings by Shilen or Criterion? The Origin is threaded for a Savage small shank and there are quite a few places that make prefits for that tenon including McGowen, Krieger, Patriot Valley, Southern Precision (aka Bug Holes), Keystone Accuracy, Brux, and Hawk Hill just as a start. Options are always a good thing in my book.

What stock are you considering out of curiosity?

My next one will be an impact or defiance if I buy a non production class build. If it’s a production class it will most likely be a Curtis that MPA uses in their production rifle.

Stock hasnt been determined yet. I have a Model 70 being built using a k&p barrel right now.

Just a reminder for PRS Production you have to buy the complete rifle. You cannot build it out of components used for a production rifle. In fact you have to send the rifle back to the manufacturer to replace a barrel when it is shot out. Trigger, action, chassis and barrel all have to be factory assembled.

The OP said nothing about a PRS gun. For the money you cant beat a 700 action. A competent gunsmith can fix any issues it may have rt out of the box for a lot less than a $1200 or more custom action. I have a bunch of competition grade 700 action guns with Brux bbls and Jewell triggers. I've got one Kelbly Panda and I think everybody ought to own at least one but its no huntin' gun unless you are going to prairie dog hunt from a bench. The Curtis is nice especially for a PRS gun but my gunsmith ordered a half dozen and had to do selling jobs on folks to get them to buy them and he hasnt ordered anymore. He also just built himself a BR gun on a BAT M action. The market is flooded with $1200 actions.

Yeah I know MPA has a complete production class rig. https://masterpiecearms.com/shop/mpa-ba-pmr-pro-competition-rifle/

OP didn't say he wasn't looking for one either. He even mentioned he might compete with this build.

Someone compared the Rem 700 SA to the Chevy small bock; it's truth. You can find them anywhere, they don't break the bank, a 'real' 'smith can work on them, and it's a solid foundation upon which to build a LR rifle.

Mine is a Remington SA, still wearing its factory 308 barrel. If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with a factory savage rifle and upgrade the stock. Remington shoots fine though, and one day I may have another barrel put on.

Well I found a place that had the barrel I wanted in stock. Bartlein #13 Rem/Varm Straight fluted. Still looking for an action thats in stock. Im going with the Tenacity. Something about the retaining pin for the bolt face in the Origin just makes me worry...other than that the Origin seems solid. I did settle on a stock too....Manners t2a Gap.
