What are you drinking?

I was a little short on disposable income this month so instead of my usual bottle of glen livet 15 year old (which is over $80 a bottle now with tax ) and got a bottle of their 12 year old for about half that.

It’s not bad. The taste is a lot sharper but still pretty good.

I miss the days the 15 was under $50.

I’d like to be manly enough to enjoy drinking it neat one of these days but 2 things for me.

1: I hate room temp drinks. Make up your mind hot or cold dammit.

2: I do think that pouring it over a couple of cubes of ice opens the flavors a little. That little bit of ice melting take a really tight flavor and let’s it open up.

After spending way to much time having to drink whatever was wet, at the ambient outdoor temp, doesn't even matter to me anymore. In my younger days it was a double shot of Jack over 2 ice cubes though, so I know what you mean.

Anything Sierra Nevada is good in my book.

You been up to the brewery?

No, unfortunately I never made it up there when we lived in NC. I hope to check it out some day.

Surprisingly good-

That 15 y/o is by far my favorite. I snuck a dozen bottles of it back with me (it was super cheap lol) when I rotated from Germany back to the States a few years ago.
Finally out of it all (I dont drink very often) and almost had a heart attack when I saw the price tag at ABC the other day.
I have to be at Ft. Gordon in Augusta this weekend, Im gonna check the price on post and grab one or two. Im sure it will fit the budget much better from there lol.

Nice. The price sky rocketed in the last 5 years. Not sure why but the French oak has become very popular and the price went up because of that.

Probably has a lot to do with those barrels its aged in. The Scotches Ive tried overwhelm me with the peat smell and the bite from the iodine content in the sea salts. It overpowers the taste for me and I can't stand em. That particular one is very smooth and not aromatically offensive to me. I actually get to enjoy the taste and subtleties of the liqour itself.
And, boy is it good lol.

I'd venture a guess that a great many folks are like me in the smell and taste department. We have slowly discovered a milder scotch, opened ourselves to a new flavor profile, and increased demand.

Bastards.

Shit, only once in a while can I afford better than Canadian Hunter. Which for now is sufficient.

First cigar in several months. Lost most of my collection due to a mold outbreak that I didn't catch in time.... this diesel uncut has 3 plus years on it. Going very well with the dew ;)

Found a nice winter IPA today as well.

Man I wish my grocery store had more choices. They're extremely limited. You always have some interesting brews. I loved living in Portland, OR. They had so many rare ales I was always finding a new fav. One of my extra special favorites they had out there was Saxer Jack Frost Winter Doppelbock. That stuff was scrumptious!

I’ve definitely been able to get ahold of a lot more variety of beer since moving to TX. Portland does have an excellent beer scene, I was in Portland area for a week back in Sep for a friends wedding. Got to try lots of good beer. Next weekend the wife and I are flying to Denver for the weekend to do a little hiking and check out the breweries.

Heck yeah man. Denver is a beautiful place. It's pretty cold out there this time of year. Be sure to bundle up! hahaha!

Hey man... you wanna know something funny? My name is Derek too & it's spelled the same as your's! We're a rare breed! Cheers! :D

Yeah, I’ve been checking the weather there and it is cold for sure. Actually bought a better jacket for it yesterday as we don’t often need those here in a San Antonio.

Prefer scotch but this caught my eye. Thought I’d read good things so why not....

Probably too late but my cousins own this place.

Just a little north of Denver

Our ABC store just started carrying Old Pulteney 12 year single malt scotch. Very nice drink for the price ($45-ish a bottle).

I drink it neat, but a splash of water or a bit of ice does make for a different flavor experience. Whatever floats your boat.

We just got back from Denver last night and it was a great brewery trip. I visited 3 different Oskar Blues tap rooms in Denver, Colorado Spring and the original location where they started in Lyons. We also went to Great Divide, Odell, Avery Epic and a few other local breweries. One very cool brewery we went to was built in an old school in Colorado Springs.

Quadruple Big Bad Baptist. Phenomenal beer.
