What blade are you carrying today?

Had the larger Gerber Combat Folder. Found it here in Afghanistan back in 11' and lost it here end of 18'.

CD
On my first deployment to Iraq, the large Applegate was issued to me. I carried it for a year. Then, that summer, I was deployed on a British Navy Ship off the coast of Africa. On US ships, booze is prohibited, but we drank every night on the British ship. One night, I got drunk and traded the Applegate folder to a Royal Navy Sailor for a Benchmade. It was a trade i never would have made if I had been sober. I've missed that knife ever since.

Oh man... Typing that out made me sad. I just ordered a replacement. Here's the link of anyone is interested in getting one of the BIG old Applegate folders for about $100.

My new Rex Applegate Combat Folder just came in the mail from Amazon.

It's pictured beside the smaller Covert with spring assisted opening. I've had that little guy for a couple of years now.

After seeing @rantingredneck post about those Eafengrow blades and with extreme reservation I thought I might try one. I wanted to try sharpening a tanto blade on my wicked edge and thought for $19.99 this EF65 would be a good one to use. It is surprisingly well made, the grind was a bit uneven and I know it's not really D2 steel, but whatever it is will take a fine edge for sure. I can tell it is softer steel than my Benchmade 940 in S30V, but it came shaving sharp out of the box and after a bit with the wicked edge it is scary sharp. I was able to even most of the non-uniformity of the edge out on the coarser grits before working it up to 1 micron lapping film.

Supposedly it has ball bearings, I didn't take it apart but I have no reason to not believe it, its super smooth. It locks up tight too, there is no play at all. The detent that keeps it closed is very pronounced and provides enough resistance to ensure that it always opens fully when you press the flipper lever. Pocket clip is nice and thick and well made. Pretty neat, I'll probably get a few more of different models to satisfy my new toy addiction. I've handled my share of chinese junk but someone knows what they are doing over there making these.

That's right! I'll saw them open with the quarter... I just put the knife in the picture for scale, so you can see how small the quarter is...
I always wondered about the meaning of Drawn and Quartered. :D
