What Did You Do In The Garage Today?

@Short Fuse so what was wrong?
It appeared the jeep had been rolled end over end , semi repaired and sold. The entire front clip had been replaced as well as the rear axle and all the swing arms with junk yard parts. The jeep had a 3 inch body lift on it at the time of the accident and the entire tub was shifted about 1.5 inches forward and the lift blocks where leaning forward at about a 25 degree angle. This had crushed the bottom of the body that sits on those blocks and let rust start which had eaten all the way through the body support structures to the point the only thing supporting the body is just the single layer of floor pan. Did I mention this jeep was from the rust belt also. Soon a good bump will come along and the body is going to drop 3 inchs down to the frame and the lift blocks will be in the cab with the driver. The brakes are worn out front and rear , it needs all the ball joints and tie rod ends, plus a ton of other crap. 93k on it and it is scrap the new owner bought it a couple of weeks ago in Ohio and didn't get it checked out cause he drove up there to get it because it was such a great deal. That good deal doesn't seem so good now. All to save save 30 minutes and $30. The sad thing is I see crap like this almost weekly.

Organized my ammo shelves a bit. Cleaned out my range bag and organized it. Loaded about 10 mags up that were empty

Brought my 30 gallon air compressor over to my garage after it has beem sitting unused for 5 years and finding I had a bad breaker followed by a leaky regualtor. Breaker has been replaced and ordered a regulator rebuild kit off of Amazon. 10 minutes and no more leaks.20171104_172935.jpg 20171104_172920.jpg

Changed the oil and filter in my 2006 Jeep GC Limited Hemi. Greased the zerk fittings on the front end and then jacked the old girl up and rotated the tires and cleaned the rims.

Noticed a small leak in the lower radiator hose so my wife headed to NAPA to grab the Zerex G-05 coolant and a new radiator hose as Jeep work=Beer drinking for me :).

She then proceeded to call the NAPA counter dude an "arrogant (insert F word here) prick" for being so condescending to her for her choice of "specific parts and coolant" because, you know, the stuff he wanted to sell her works for everything:rolleyes:.

Tomorrow will be a radiator drain and flush followed up with new hoses and fluid plus some beer drinking and good tunes on the garage system.

Wife said the gearbox on the bush hog started making noises and got hot and stinky so she parked it. It was bone dry when I checked it so I pulled the front off.

Not looking too good for that thing!

Changed the oil and noticed I've got a CV axle gone bad. I'll replace it next week.

Ouch, that looks pretty bad! At least your wife recognized that something was wrong and didn't just keep going.

Installed vent on my gas can from my gasspouts.com kit. Took a while to empty the can via my lawnmower.

Cleaned my Octane9 in my ultrasonic but the 50/50 Purple Power mix only works mildly well. I've read that Zep Citrus degreaser works much better so I'm gonna grab some tomorrow.

Oil change/fuel filters/coolant filter on the truck. Also installed a grill blanket, never needed one of those before...

Replaced all four rotors and pads on my Tahoe. Also bled the brakes. Used Akebono performance pads, my initial impression is very favorable. I figured I saved about $500 doing the job myself. Did have one issue with a lug nut that rounded off a bit due to the monkey that did the last rotation way over tighten it. Hammered on a socket and was able to get the nut off.

Started the tear down on my f250. The egr cooler has started leaking so its time to do that and while we are in there an oil cooler. I hope to have it back together tomorrow. Got everything off except the intake egr cooler and oil cooler ( about another hrs work).

Had an impromptu patch/tire rotation session after I picked up a bolt in one of my tires passing by the scene of a wreck

Delete the egr cooler and switch to a cat ec1 rated coolant

Got the 41 Ford back from paint. Looks like I drew the straw for updating the birds nest of existing wiring. There is serious discussion of putting an inline flat head six and 3spd manual back in and get the fire pump operating again. This project went from "just get it running" to "this is a piece of history and we went it correct." We had an older previous member show up and give us some good info on it. Turns out it was a first run truck until 1973.

My camera phone sucks.

Myself and a couple of other volunteers have been tasked in getting this 1941 Ford fire engine back on the road. We met tonight at the garage to get a game plan. Going to get the brakes braking and the cooling system cooling first.View attachment 13832 View attachment 13832

Well I got all the parts for the EGR delete today and got everything off the truck. Sending the intake and some other parts to my brothers shop tomorrow to be washed in the parts washer. I hope to have it put back together tomorrow evening. One thing I know for sure is that the next house my wife and I buy will have a shop that my truck will fit in so I'm not working on it in the driveway!!!!

Cleaned/descaled my tankless water heater. Ran 2 gal of vinegar through it via sump pump in a 5gal bucket.

Super easy to do, only takes a little over an hour.

I need to do that as I’ve had my current tankless in for around 3 years. Did you see any scale/deposits come out? I installed my first tankless at my old house, which I still have as a rental, around 12 years ago and never descaled it. Still seems to be running strong.

I bought my house 1.5yr ago, it was 4.5yr old and the water heater had never been cleaned. We were having issues getting HOT water to the master bath, farthest point from water heater. I did the vinegar flush and viola! There was a ton of scale (white build up) that came out in the bucket. This time there was only some very fine scale but I had to really look for it.
I've read that it's best to do annually, but I think I'll stick to every other year. Everyone's water is going to be different but this should work for me.
Considering the total time including setup & clean up is only 90min, including watching the how-to youtube video, and cost is sub-$10 for vinegar, I would probably do it on your rental.

Put a new battery in my motorcycle. Tried to fire over the project bike...then I realized the ignition switch wires are not connected. Tomorrow I'll try to figure out where they are supposed to go and try again.

I replaced the drivers side CV axle on my 1999 Accord with 210k miles on it! I bought the car new and this is the first CV replacement. Everything went smoothly until it was time to slide it out of the hub. After 18 years it didn't want to come out.

Started with my 3 pound sledge and then went to the full size sledgehammer! It wouldn't budge. Had to heat the hub up and then it finally broke loose. A one hour job took 2 and a half! Oh well, at least I saved a good bit of money. Scott Clark wanted $800 to change it, Hendrick wanted $750, the local independent wanted $265. It only cost me $40 for the axle.

Now if I can only convince the wife that I can buy a new pistol and still come out $300 ahead, I'll be in business!

I just finished about an hour ago putting down a new 12mm laminate wood floor (about 80 boxes worth). But the first part of the job consisted of taking up the glued down parquet flooring. What a chore that was. It's taken about a month for the total job. Now the wife wants to start decorating so I've been hustling Christmas trees (yes plural) down from the upstairs storage area. It's beginning to look like a pine forest.

We figure by doing it ourselves we've saved about $10 - $15K. I'm trying to convince the wife that's money we can buy a new truck with. Not sure she's buying it.

The last legitimate thing I did was replacing the serpentine belt on a Toyota Corolla 1.8, which is almost trivially easy. Today I tried to violate the laws of physics by moving stuff around inside the garage to make it bigger than it was before. It didn't work, even though I actually threw some stuff away.

Feel your pain I been doing same, the trash pile keeps getting bigger the more I try to find room in my basement to put my office.

Painless this will not be. Seriously though I just put that same harness in a 46 gmc pickup with a 5.3 if you get stuck pm me.
:D

Thanks for the offer, I might need it. This is for the 41 Ford with SBC we are working on. It has Franken wiring job now so trying to do it right as we can. It has some circuits that are not fused and just a big mess right now. I have a feeling I will be doing lots of depinning on this harness.

Not necessarily in the garage, but did involve a trip to the garage.

I get called downstairs to come listen to dishwasher going crazy, it was acting like it was possessed. Shut off breaker and go back to work for the rest of the day.

After dinner, turn breaker on, same stuff. Kill the breaker, get to the display board, and remove it. Water comes dripping out. My wife starts laughing while saying "I might have spilled some water on the counter earlier." Drain the display board, hit with the hair dryer, dishwasher good as new again.

Changing out the stupid OEM battery in the mini-beast. Why do they put unsealed batteries in a tractor is beyond me. I just caught it in time so there's no acid damage, just post fuzz. The vibration had the acid drool out the vent caps.

Cleaned it all up and now looking for a nice Group 51 AGM.

Autozone near me didn't have a Group 51 but a Group 35 will fit in the space. $182.
PepBoys has a Bosch AGM Group 51 for $142ish.

Good part is I have a short gig spreading out gravel for a garage pad so at least it's paid for. Decisions, decisions...

Changed the oil in my wife's 4Runner. I've rebuilt small engines, done brake jobs, and replaced alternators, but have never done an oil change until today. It just never made sense with $20 oil changes but with full synthetic at $70, sure I'll do it myself for $30.

You are kidding, right???

I changed the oil on my generator and push mower this spring, does that count? haha. I'm almost as surprised, but like I said, it never made sense to spend $15 in materials when I could pay someone to do it for $20-25 all in. With both of our cars requiring full synthetic now, sure I'll save $120/year (not counting rebates/deals) to do it myself.
