So what happens to in process permits when the sheriff changes? Does the new guy get to change all the rules and start everyone over?

The permit is issued by the office of the sheriff, shouldn't matter who is sitting in the chair.

While they are required to follow the rules, there is enough wiggle room to make it a hassle if they want to. Make appointments hard to get, make for long lines, run out the clock on background checks, make you wait the full 90, etc. In Guilford, where Barnes was just defeated, he was famous for doing stuff like this, at least until there were so many permits to process that he had to stop playing games because of the cost and logistics.

In Mecklenburg any thing under 90 days is usual.

The Legislature has taken away much of the Sherrifs wiggle room, especially for CHP’s. But he can still run out the clock, require appointments, etc. I was shocked that Donnie lost in Wake, it’s never even been close before. He is a good man and a great sheriff. A lot of good deputies are going to lose their jobs in January because they all serve at the pleasure of the Sheriff. This new guy campaigned on more minority deputies. Also Donnie cooperated with ICE and new guy says he won’t.

You must bow, kiss the ring and pledge undying loyalty to his/her highness, then wait for the acknowledgement of thy peasant status.

Seriously, I don’t have a clue. In my county, the secretary does all of the permits. I honestly do not think our current sheriff even knows what the process is. They bring them to him in a stack, to sign.

I've told my wife for a coup,e years we need to get out of Wake County. This is just another domino to fall. I've likely got anout 5 more years here, but it neber hurts to make plans.
Agreed, especially after last night when every county commissioner seat and every board of education seat was easily won or retained by the enemy.

My wife doesn't pay much attention or get as worked up as I do, but Sue Evans winning set her off last night. When Evans was on the school board she mucked everything up and had that ever so common elitist do as I say attitude. And their grand bussing plan got so screwed up it had to be changed in about 2 weeks.

Maybe now Mrs. Fool understands...

Concealed permits shouldn't change as to approvals, they can muck around with process and fees some. Pistol permits are much more at the discretion of the Sherrifs. Yet another reason to get your CHP

Yep, the PPP’s will be easier to manipulate than the “shall issue” CHP’s ... but the 2 counties (Wake and Durham) I think of will likely see worse turn around on CHP’s due to the new sheriffs in town.

It will be interesting to see if there are in changes in the process and paperwork the sheriff requests on PPP’s along with the appointments and such for CHP’s.

Big Donnie had a whole dept dealing with pistol permits and CCP's. I was impressed the last time I was there (thankfully this year for CCP renewal) with the facilities and the process. Not perfect but a damn sight better than it was under the old Baker. The new Baker could dismantle that whole dept and create a tremendous log jam of paper work. How in the hell did he get elected when Linda Coleman did not???
