What lever rifle to get?

The role of the rifle is a range toy. I don't hunt, I do take out pest on the small farm. However with that said I keep quality firearms that I can depend my life on to a certain extent. I will never own a Taurus or Keltec or Sccy, etc. I've seen to many go down and those by far give the most trouble when I have conceal carry classes.

I'm bias to the Rossie soly because it's a clone of the Win receiver. BCM AR vs a Noveske...both are quality and both are dependable. May be comparing apples to oranges regarding AR vs Lever but Precision and AR's I know (building, repairing)

Isn't Rossi and Taurus the same thing? :D

Get a Henry big boy steel and don’t look back. I picked one up a while back and it is probably my favorite to shoot now. It recoils like a .22 but packs a punch on the receiving end. My girlfriend loves shooting it as well. One of my favorite things to do with it is shoot at plate at around 100 yards. You shoot, and then watch the bullet hit. It’s pretty fun.

All Hail the .41 Magnum!

Taurus = Rossi = Braziltech

If you don't mind the tube loading, get a Henry.
If you don't want the gate, pony up for a JM Stamped Marlin.

And if you want tube loading and side gate loading in a kick ass caliber packaged in a slick little carbine get a .454 Rossi/Puma. :D

Puma?

I do like the side gate...that is one of the characteristics of a lever action to me.

Puma .454 imported by LSI but made in Spain by Rossi if I recall correctly.

I have the Rossi 16" Trapper model. It is a good little carbine that packs a punch. And with the tube loading also, you don't have to cycle the rounds through the action to unload the carbine.

For changing rear sights, look at either a Lyman or Williams receiver sight. For brass hitting your head, either turn rifle slightly sideways when levering or not as vigorous on the lever.

I also dislike buckhorn sights.
FYI, the older Rossi 20" came with a normal Winchester pattern square/notch rear. You can still order it directly from Rossi, BUT you have to give them the SN of a carbine they came on.
I have such a carbine, so if you plan to swap, holler.

Got a Rossi today in 357. Was betweennthat and a Henry. Went with Rossi because they are hard to find and Henry’s are a dime a dozen

Fun to shoot in 38spl +p

I hate buckhorn sights though.

I think you got that backwards. The Rossi's are everywhere, the Henry's are a little more scarce. Neither should be "hard to find."

Around here, every gun store I went in to had Henry's mostly in pistol caliber or 45-70. I called guns with int a 50 mile radius, Fuquay Gun was the only one to have a Rossi in 357.

Skinner makes a fine aperture sight.

...for Henry's! :D

Agreed, however, the aperture works much better (for me) when close to my eye (think AR15 or M1 rear sight.)
The newer Rossi has that funky top mounted safety that can be replaced with an aperture.
The older models, only choice for a Skinner is dovetail mount, thats a tough spot for an aperture.

Fyi, Taurus sells a peep sight (copy of marbles, IIRC) that is very affordable and fully serviceable.

The best solution, IMO, is to simply replace the rear with a traditional flat top notch Winchester style rear.

I have the barrel mount on my 44 mag and it works better than I expected. But my 22mag Small Game Crabine has the Skinner on the receiver, and you are correct. That is a better set up.

I like the idea of the aperture like on a AR/M1 because of my Garands. Flat top notch, like this? https://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_16&products_id=42

Then there is this that replaces the safety. https://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_16&products_id=10

I'm ordering the safety delete now. I'm just going out to 150-200 yards really.

Which barrel mount sight?

They also have a Henry Steel in .357 I plan on picking up in June!
I went to Cabela's first to put my hands on a Henry, Marlin and could instantly tell the Marlin was a Remington product. Henry was slick and nice. I do like it, in black. Sales guys was trying hard for me to buy it and that price match. I told him it's hard to price match when your competition is closed..haha.

They make one that fits into the buckhorn dovetail on the barrel. It works fine for short range or defensive use. But it is not really a target set up. I'd say if you were brush hunting it would be handy. Kinda like a poor man's scout set up with a nice open field of view. But not as precise and the receiver mounted peeps.

The front brass..gets lost when shooting at my berm or something that is natural tan, brown. Might need to put some nail polish on it to hold me over for a bit. Maybe white.

You can polish the brass bead and seal it with a thin coat of clear.

I am going to order a set of these and try them out before the deer season rolls around again. I am about 99% sure they will work.

I hate those. So hard to use.
A front sight needs a flat top.
I'd swap it same time you swap the rear.

Call Taurus up and complain, they might send you a better one. They occasionally surprise me.
See if they will send you a sight set from a M62/M63. Those are awsome.
How much of a pita is it to get the sight right to drill the other hole?
