I have an Aero in..308 that I love. It currently has a 1-4x24 illuminated scope from Cabelas. It's actually a pretty decent scope, but feel the magnification should be higher. I'm considering moving that scope to another carbine.

Thoughts on what should ride on top of my big bore carbine???

I have a 3-9x40 on mine, but going to a 3-9x50 Leupold, setting it up for 1 inch high at 100 yards, and lettin it eat out to 350 or so without fiddling with knobs

Mine is currently rocking a swfa fixed 10x. From everything I've read the thing is Rock solid and has repeatable turrets. When I build a 6.5 upper for it, I think I'll get something from Vortex with a bit more magnification.

I picked up a PA10 when PSA had their sale, then walked into my LGS and they cut me a smokin' deal on a Sig Tango 4 6-24 MOA/MOA. I put it on a Warne 20 MOA mount.

At 24x, I can see my heartbeat throwing it around 1-2 MOA with each beat. Not only do I need to work on my form, I need to work on timing the break.

Scope and rings ran just under twice what I dropped on the rifle.

First question I have is how far are you going to be reaching, or attempting to reach with the rifle?

I have a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18 AO on my Bushmaster.

I didn't choose it, specifically. I got it in a trade and it was the highest magnification scope I had, so it was tossed on.

What works for me is a range up to 16x ~18x and your mileage may differ.
I also run a few fixed 10x scopes.

Currently the following is on sale and I thought I seen a coupon to take off an additional $30.00.

Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x40 Mil Dot Target Riflescope 56130

Moving down the price point, you may want to consider the following from UTG. These are listed on Amazon and with Amazon if you don't like it, send it back. I've also seen these for as low as 177 and change delivered off Manventure.

UTG 2-16X44 30mm Multi-range AO Scope
SCP3-216UMOA
UMOA RETICLE:
The high quality etched glass UMOA reticle, one of our latest reticles, utilizes hash marks at 2 MOA increments allowing intuitive and on-the-fly calculations, holdovers, and leads. When it comes to the environment and time of day, you can illuminate the center crosshair in virtually any color of your choosing with our patented 36 Color Illumination Enhancing System. Outstanding light transmission is achieved through emerald coated lenses for a crystal clear view. When it comes to straight to the point precision, this scope is like no other.

Also FWIW there's a Misconception that UTG will not warranty their scopes.
UTG has a Life Time Warranty on their scopes and it is transferable.
Anytime I get a scope I email the ser # to make sure it's not a counterfeit and with the reply it's as good as cleared for "Proof of Purchase" with many manufactures.

NO, I don't work for or am I compensated by UTG.

Burris MTAC scope~s are on sale at a few sites as well.

Sightron seems to be a good ~ excellent choice

Primary Arms? Yes I like the reticle they come up with but have steered clear of their scope because of the 1 & 3 yr warranty, although I believe PA has been offering their scopes now with a Life Time warranty at or around the 4 price point.

On the warranty thing, I believe Vortex, Burris & Leupold (?) will warranty an abused scope while many other manufactures will not.

I did a detailed resolution test of the Leopold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50 Mil Dot on an expert witness case about three years ago. I was not impressed with the optical resolution that I measured above about 9X magnification. I would say it’s more of a medium range scope, than a long range one.

The Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x40 will probably have similar optical performance to 50mm versión I tested. The turrets are repeatable and the image contrast is acceptable, though, so the scope is still a good value at $630. At the list price, I would look for something else.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk (I corrected the scope model tested).

I bought a PSA 10 a couple of months ago and put a VX3i 3.5-10 on it that I picked up on sale at Opticsplanet for $360. I have two other VX3's, one is a 4.5-14 on a bolt 308 and the other is a 2.5-8 on my 270 hunting rifle. I do not have access to shoot beyond 300 yards (315 actually at DPRC). Any of these is enough magnification for what I shoot and I probably could have just as well saved some money and gone with a fixed 6x on any or all of them since 6 or 7 power is what I almost always shoot at.
