Hiking around yesterday I ran into this "plant". I have no idea what it is and it looks down right evil.

Looks like that thing would reach out and grab you.

People around here call them thornbushes. No idea of the proper name. They will go right thru a tractor tire. If we see one in the pasture or woods, we cut and treat it right then.

A much smaller one did. Was out walking around trying to find some squirrels for the Brunswick stew, and the dang thing grabbed me by surprise. Yeah, it hurt a little.

Had what looked like little oranges on them, should have grabbed a pic, it was interesting.

I believe that is a Flying Dragon. Ive stepped on a dead limb in the woods before and had a thorn go through the bottom of my boot and into my foot. Pure Evil.

It is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Be afraid, be very afraid.

I would think some Round Up or diesel fuel would be in order.

I forgot to add "You'll poke your eye out with that thing"

Cut it close to the ground, and treat the stump with a 50/50 mix of diesel and one of the triclopyr products like Remedy or Relegate. That will kill it. Roundup, 24d, dicambria etc are a waste of time and money. It spreads fairly aggressively.

Looks like an Osage Orange. Some folks call it a Horseapple. They make outstanding wood for the making of longbows.
Folks used to plant them real close together around a fenceline. The old folks said that a "mad bull" couldn't get through it!

EDIT: read upthread and saw that you found it. As always...disregard my last.

This! Looks like a good plant for a little layered property security. Right outisde ground level windows or lining an area you don't want people to cross.

I don't recognise that as anything native. If I had to guess, its an imported ornamental that got away and went wild. That dark green vine color, combined with the thorns and the compound leaf doesn't look like anything I'm accustomed to seeing in NC.

That would make a fantastic hedge with a neighbor you don't like.

Seriously, my grandma planted one of these in her yard, on purpose. I've been caught in it more than once on the mower. My Gravely has pushed over a small apple tree before but that thorn bush is impenetrable.

I've run into them while hiking before. They look like Jesus thorns, terrible things to be anywhere you wouldn't have a barbed wire fence.

That's a thornacopia! See what I did there?

Yes there is a big one across from thrillhill shop. We saw last year or the one before, cant remember. Think we tried the oranges, very bitter

Yep. That's exactly what it is.

TIme is flyin on us ole boy. Been 5 years now! Becky makes preserves with them now. Kinda like a tart marmalade.

Hmmm... I'd be interested in getting a cutting of that from someone. After doing some research, I think it could be useful. It's very hardy and disease resistant.. ;)

What part of the state are you located in? I am in Chatham County and we have one here on the property that you are welcome to come check out and take a piece of if you want.

They were imported to make protective hedgerows.

We make jelly out of the fruit. Remind me next time you 're over and I'll give you some.
I'd like to get some from you to plant at our place in areas where I would like to make a barrier. Seeing as I'm in the same area, it should grow well.

No problem noway2. I'm off on Sundays and Mondays. Just give me a holler when you might wanna come by and we can hook up.

Those things are deadly. Back in 701 or 72 one of the guys that rode with us, ran his Nighttrain into one. He had festering sores for a year afterward.

I've done a fair amount of walkin' through the woods and haven't seen that thing before. Thanks for the heads up!

Those thorn bushes and Hog Ear cactus are 2 things I have understood why people plant them in their yards.
