What's your competition gun?

So, it's you and two other guys in the whole state. Everyone else swaps guns, holsters, and cover before and after...

I myself am often guilty. I usually shoot a 34 these days, but rarely with the uniform IDPA vest anymore... Although I have been carrying it more often in the cold weather... Of course I also shoot my 19 or 43 in competition from IWB quite often...
Yeah, but I not a gamer, I shoot to hone my skills with a firearm and worry more about where I finish in accuracy than I do time,, I can shoot faster an be less accurate, I just choose not too.

No worries. Just pointing out an observation over the last decade or so of shooting matches... It's just a game after all... One I enjoy...

Gotcha, there's something for everyone one at the matches, the most important thing there is the good time everyone has, you make.friends, learn a lot, and get a sunburn, what could be better

Not sure what the penis envy with the USPSA guys is. You guys have penises, right?

You never hear the IDPA guys even talk about USPSA.

Which reminds me why I shoot IDPA. I'm more interested in shooting accurately than running fast.

If you look at the Brian Enos IDPA forum this notice is at the top:
"This forum requires excessive moderation due to continuous real and imagined slights against IDPA. As a result the Moderating Team has discussed deleting the IDPA Forum altogether. So:
Please post respectfully or don't post at all.

This is true. There is waaay too much smack talk about IDPA! IDPA is a great sport and a great place to start but if you ever notice, the most smack talk comes from former IDPA guys. The best comparison between the 2 sports that i can find is that USPSA is shots of liquor, coke, and BJ's. IDPA is checkers and root beer. I personally love checkers and root beer but once you take your first shot of liquor, snort your first line, and get your first BJ, well, it's all down hill after that!:D

I like IDPA for the simple reason where they hold the matches is only 15 minutes from me.
Like I final figured out playing cmmpetative softball for years. None of US are that good, if so we would be doing it professionally. In the end is just a game we all enjoying playing.

That was exactly why I shot IDPA, 15 minutes from the house and at that time was enjoying it.

But the high wasnt cutting it no more. Needed bigger and longer lasting,....... USPSA.

Sorry but this is simply not true. Yes the majority of the smack talk is at the expensive of IDPA but statements like “that will get you killed in the real world” can be heard at IDPA gatherings directed at USPSA/IPSC. My dad shot IDPA for years up at Frank’s and was a CDP Master. My first match was an IDPA match at The Range when I was 12 and I really enjoyed it. I just happen to prefer USPSA because the format is more of a pure game as opposed to a training/game hybrid of sorts. In the end I think the trash talk back and forth is in good fun and absolutely nothing to do with envy, definitely nothing to do with penises. I think your statement was a little Defensive but I guess you were just putting the “D” in IDPA (see what I did there). I have no animus towards IDPA and think the ribbing (and again) you’re feeling is that of a brother picking on you and not that of a foe.

I actually shot a steel match with you up at woody’s back when you first dove into competition. Did you enjoy it less because you weren’t shooting from cover? If you had to draw from concealment would that have added to your enjoyment? Have you tried USPSA since getting into comp? I agree with @FatboyFlash that the majority of the trash talk is from former IDPA guys who tried “liquor, coke, and BJ’s” and are now poking fun of “checkers and root beer.”

Sorry for the thread derailment @Majicmike.

Had a big novel typed out for the IDPA vs USPSA banter but deleted it...

I will say, a lot of USPSA shooters could really benefit from a year or two in IDPA. You can run fast, look cool, and hose, but when it comes to fundamental pistol shooting, oh boy! I see it at every match!

For the record, I still prefer the USPSA game.

To the OP, go shoot what you want! Have fun and learn ways to improve! It’s a hobby and it should be fun. There will always be assholes in every sport, be better than me and try to ignore them.

If you ever want to shoot accurately AND run fast then give USPSA a try. It’s a blast.

There always the non IDPA/USPSA guys that come in here and make fun of all the pew-pew-pew-pew-pew-pew guys....or am i the only one?

I really like the VP9. I also really like the 34!
Both are fine handguns. And great for whatever game you choose!

My first centerfire match was IDPA. Slappy, if you post that video you will surely be wearing an STI anally.

Let’s just say it wasn’t very impressive. But I was safe, didn’t get dq’d and hit a lot of shots. And it got me hooked on action shooting! I’ve shot some very enjoyable idpa matches. The thing I do appreciate about idpa is the focus on stock carry guns and service pistols. A lot of guys/gals just want to have some fun and get better with these type of guns that they may even carry.
That sounds like good responsible gun owners to me. I am down with that.

Have moved on to other stuff myself mostly, but by all means please shoot idpa. It will teach you how to shoot, and it will allow you to enjoy your guns in safe and fun environment. What’s not to like?
And, kweers need a sport, too. I keed I keed!!

But seriously, I’ve never had a crappy time shooting matches no matter what they are. Idpa, uspsa, rimfire, multigun, sporting clays: its all good. It’s all hella fun!! Try them all!!!

This thread was immensely entertaining. As for the OP, if you want to shoot, get a gun and shoot. The VP9 will work just fine. The 34 is great too. I used to shoot a 3.8 xdm at every competition I went to until I bought a CZ SP-01. Go shoot first and you will have a better understanding of the gear you want for your chosen game.

I used to shoot ISPC back in the 90s.

I re-read the thread and not sure why I even said that. I'll attribute it to poor diet, old age, and probably needed a bathroom break.

There are couple of venues where I think your statement is spot on, and you mentioned one, and honestly I haven't shot them because I hear there is a different "attitude" from the other venues I'll mention.

I've shot probably 3-4 weekends a month for the past two years at H20, Buccaneer, Deep River, Ant Hill, Woody's (before Damon canceled it), and Coharie (before the MD's wife had health issues and temporarily canceled it). We've got some incredibly competitive shooters while at the same time very welcoming to new shooters. I just like the vibe at all the places I mentioned and had heard repeatedly that it's a little "different" up at Oxford.

Been shooting the Glock for the past year, might shoot the Range Officer in CDP some again this year. Need to change the front fiber to green. Works better for me.

I'm quite entertaining when I run a 1911 on the clock, and I don't mean that in a good way. If they can be made to do something wrong, I can make it happen.

Glock would do just fine in production or you could stuff the mags and shoot limited minor. Either way, I’d bet money you’d enjoy yourself. We won’t tell on you for blowing cover or even dropping magazines with live rounds in them. Plus you can leave the vest at home.

I appreciate it. I just started SOing and designing stages down at H20, and still like to hob nob with my old fart buddies from there and Buccaneer so I'll stick with IDPA for a while.

Plus I just learned the rules after two years. Can't stop now. :D

@Majicmike Just a heads up. I'm pretty sure the regular monthly match at H20 for March will be a day/night match. It's a once a year kind of thing. Probably shoot midday (it will be announced), wrap up around four, go eat dinner, come back and reshoot the match in the dark with only a handheld light. No weapon mounted lights. You can shoot just the "day" match, or both, as I recall.

FWIW, I found took a picture of @Slappy McTrigger showing up to the last competition I went to.

I WANNA GO FAST!!!

I think the first one I'm doing is a "bug" match.
That's the next one my buddy can do. I don't want to go out there and aggravate someone I don't really know with a million question,, that's why I'm waiting for him. He has built up a tolerance for my ignorance over the years.
Once I know I know my way around I'll do more.
He's a lot better shot than me but he always does poorly,, can't figure that out.

There're five Saturdays in March, so there's a BUG match at H20 the last Saturday. As for questions, there are always anywhere from a dozen to 25 new shooters at every match depending on the size of the crowd, and you will find that crowd enjoys helping noobs out.
